Wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to what the problem is here and/or if it is fixable.

It's a friend's laptop. It boots fine and loads everything normally. The only thing that doesn't work before it BSOD's is the LAN connection. If I leave the laptop idle it will BSOD after a given period of time - that seems to vary quite randomly. I can make it BSOD by trying to "diagnose" what's wrong with the LAN connection.

The error code given on the blue screen is 8E, which is as follows:

ERROR_BUSY_DRIVE
142
0x8E

The system cannot perform a JOIN or SUBST at this time.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library … S.85).aspx

Error Message:

The system cannot perform a JOIN or SUBST at this time.

Explanation:

The drive specified is being used by another process.

User Action:

Retry the command later.

Starting the laptop in Safe Mode works. It does not blue screen at any point. If I start it on Safe Mode with Networking, it blue screens once I've logged in and windows is loaded (much like when booting Windows normally).

I've tried updating the BIOS - hasn't worked.
Downloaded new drivers for the NIC - hasn't achieved anything.

Running Vista 32bit.

Any ideas as to what that error message means? And thus, any solutions?

---

Will check back in the morning for any replies - seeing as he's gone home with his laptop now and there's nothing I can do until I see him tomorrow.

Yeah allways the best solution tbh... reformat, if problem persists, make sure all drivers are up to date, if this doesn't help RMA it, could be hardware related..

Sounds about right...could be a faulty component or driver.  What chipset does he have running, and has he made any hardware changes lately?  (installing RAM, new HDD, etc.)

I guess if you can't solve it a reformat with everything he needs to keep backed up...I just wonder if installing all of the correct drivers again will put you back to square one.

Reformatting it is a last resort. Also, I don't have a Vista disk here with me and he doesn't have the disk that was provided when he bought the laptop.

There have been no changes to the hardware ever. I've updated the drivers, no change.

Haven't tried Dell Support over the phone, but I did try their online help. Thing is, you had to enter a "Service Tag" to proceed - which is printed on the bottom of the laptop - but it was "unable to find my service tag" when I entered it. Meh.

That, and "are you running the latest drivers?"

It's either an Indian guy, or rarely a woman with a pretty voice, who is then passed onto the IT geeks.

You can download the Vista Recovery CD and as long as you have your product code from the bottom of the laptop, you'll be fine to reinstall.  If it's files he is worried about, then remove the hard drive, install it in an external enclosure (usually about $15 online) and copy the important data to another computer.
