ATi saw that it lost the performance crown and doesn't have anything planned to strike back. So they did what they do best and respond with extremely agressive pricing...

HD 4850 X2 1GB (basically HD 4850 512MB CF) for 215€ !!
Pretty damn loud card but if u don't care how much noise it makes this is one hell of deal...
http://buy.fudzilla.com/a380439.html

HD 4870 X2 365€
Good card with minor issues with minimum fps and slightly loud fan. Again good bang for buck.
http://buy.fudzilla.com/a355516.html

NVIDIA's GTX 295 is coming down in price a little too to try to outrun ATi in its own game. 432€ atm.

Competition... its great!

lost the performance crown?  i could have sworn the GTX 295 was pretty much equal to the 4870X2...

anyway good news i guess.  if i ever have $450 () spare ill tri-fire.

the X2s get their asses handed to them in min fps and average fps is a minor loose. I just read about 32 pages long review with many drivers including the latest from both camps. :>

Hmm, interesting

If i get the cash i think i'll get a single 4850 though, 4870 or 4850x2 would be too much for me

I'll wait for the new drivers from both camps and then make a descision.  As of right now I dunno if am all that tempted, I hate the fact that the 295s back plate is exposed now (i believe the 285 does this aswell).  The 9800GX2 and GTX 280 looked the part, although I suppose am batting at flies.  Though for £400 I shouldnt have to make do :\

The reason for removing the backplate was to improve cooling. Thats why the metal cover of GTX 295 is full of tiny holes now. Shouldn't be a big deal (other than slight change in looks) as there are no memory chips on the back of the card that would need protection...

catalyst 9.1 for ATi you mean?  i thought it was supposed to improve performance for the X2s drastically.

yes and 9.x is actually 8.12 hotfix (who the hell got idea its 9.x first?). it improves the average fps quite nicely but the X2s still are behind in minimum fps. and minor loose in average fps (at least in i7 setups). ATi knows this aswell and thats why dropped the prices dramatically. (otherwise they would be still on same level, no?)

Never underestimate the appeal of a ''new'' card .  The 4870x2 has been out, what?  Five months or something?  By now the manufacturing process will have been refined, plenty of stock of, say GDDR5 which was an issue back in june for the 4870, delaying it's release, etc etc.  All of these contribute to allowing ATi to take a hit in profit, plus the fact the 4800 series has already paid for it's self and then some.  200 series is about breaking even considering the whole GTX 260/280 debacle.

Especially in the current climate, people who look at these benchmarks seem to only look at average frames.  If the X2 is shown to be keeping up on average, especially at the higher resolutions, and, is cheaper, it's going to steal a bit of buissiness from the 295.

yeah the HD 4800 threads are buzzing of ppl hooting ATi atm... on the other hand so are the G2xx threads. I guess this benefits both those who like nv and those who like ati... everyone is just excited and buying something!

260 and 280 are good cards, it's just Nvidia was making no money off em.  When are the 40nm cards due btw, april?

April-early summer if there aren't any delays...

edit: yeah the GTX 280 is selling at HUGE loss to nVIDIA with current prices.

I hope the GTXs come down in price a bit - my HD4870 drivers keep crapping themselves and I'm looking for an NVidia replacement.

If i buy a 4870 512Mb, will i be able to play at like medium resolution?, i don't want to play at 2560x1600 which is ridiculous.

yeah HD 4870 indeed is a nice card and can handle medium resolutions nicely. It was close I would have got ATi myself... the HD 4870 X2 tho... but went nvidia this time

I have a 4870 1GB even though I play at 1680x1050.  The extra 512MB has been shown to help with minimum FPS and it raises avg. FPS slightly.  I would recommend the 1GB unless you don't mind some moments of "jitter."

Well with my 30" that 1Gb would be perfect but its just very expensive.
and not sure if its worth it

Interesting thing btw... I know were to get 2 second hand HD 4870 X2s for 500€ total or 280€ for one card.

I'm a bit skeptical on temperature. I think I'll just grab a low-profile NVIDIA card and hold out for the 40nm revision (swapping it to Physics as planned on another thread). By then, my weather-based business should be in full flow again, granting me another orgy of purchasing power.

...or swallow my tech cynicism, get the good stuff now and grab whatever second revision of the GT300 there'd be early on (hopefully) in 2010.
