OC CPU, get a 4870 OC/1GB

No need for a new CPU yet

Personally I would wait another year for an upgrade of that size... save the money and get a new GFX card... then do a full upgrade later when the CPU gets old (which it really is not)...

With that CPU you're looking at ~3.8Ghz. If you've still got a stock cooler, buy this. That'll keep it coole enough under OC.
As said, buy a 4870. Probably won't need the 1GB version, what's a 22".. 1650x1050?

I really can't see how this system struggles to play COD 4 on high with AA, as I can and my system is far worse than this...

One might just do 3.8GHz 24/7 on that CPU with loads of luck and badass cooling. Learn the differences in CPU architectures...

Because spending money unnessesarily is just dumb...

a 4870 would be the best thing for that system as an upgrade and then save the rest of the money for a later build...

so getting better performance is dumb? hd 4870 is nice but when u can afford GTX 280 there is no point in getting it...

No it is not... but I'm just saying, the GTX280 is overpriced imho... you can get a 4850X2 for much less or even a 4870X2 at the same price.

280s have dropped loads lately.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

HD 4850X2 is one of the loudest cards ever.
GTX 280 has dropped MASSIVELY in price... its almost same price as GTX 260 core 216...

Maybe where you live they have... here they are still £300 whilst the 4870 is only £200, the tiny performance boost is not worth +50% the price tbh...

And don't forget about the money you can save from not having to buy the Nvidia motherboards

I would definately not spend more than £250 on a GFX card since you are better of saving the money for upgrading that card to newer tech down the road...

you DON'T need to buy NVIDIA mobo, the performance difference is bigger than tiny, the prices have dropped almost everywhere (Newegg, overclockersUK, finland, germany...)

Not all though...

Really comes down to what you play.. In my case, Crysis/COD4/etc. it is not worth the extra £100 for 5-9 more FPS

[be patient, Toms Hardware takes a sec. to load the request]

Especially now where the new Catalyst drivers boost performance on all 48xx GPUs

Yes tbh.. but as far as I've seen/heard it boosts performance on single X2 cards aswell...

Yes, however it is still a single card

If I were to look at a GTX260 Core216 I would get a 4850X2 instead since it can blow a GTX280 away at the price of the GTX260

they need to bundle some serious noise reduction system with HD4850X2 tho... its LOUD. I actually made a thread of the goob bang for buck it has but the noise levels are horrible...

and drivers the X2 and GTX 295 use are CF/SLi drivers. Catalyst 8.12 hotfix is CF scaling fix and therefore applying to the X2s as well. Nvidia recently made a SLi scaling fix for Stalker.

The Sapphire 4850X2 comes with a dual slot Toxic cooler which runs very silent
