I have a Gateway LP2407 (24" LCD) monitor, bought it a couple years ago. (2? 3?).

Not the best monitor out there, but no major complaints except for long startup time. Anyway it's got a little touch-button for power, that's usually red (for no connection), purple (off), or blue (on). Yesterday I had an issue getting a picture, but unplug/replugging the power source seemed to fix it. The one thing that was different though is it didn't make the same annoying tune when it turned on, it just turned on.

Today, I had to do the same thing. Went out for some lunch, came back, and I can't get it to turn on. I've tried different power sources, and it makes a sound like it's getting power (like an electric connection being made, not from the audio), but the little touch button has no light and has no response from touch.

Ideas? Is my monitor busted?

Failed power board if it never turns on, if it starts working again but then starts failing again frequently it's the inverter. I'd say crack it open and look for bust capacitors (80% of the time that's all it is) but not much point if you can't replace them yourself.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Monitors lasting 2 years. How much do you figure the parts are worth (for either issue)?

and more importantly, what brand do you recommend for a decent size LCD that will last > 2 years?

Try it on another PC.  If it still doesn't work, there's not much more you can do.  I guess you have nothing to lose opening it up and trying to fix it.

Some good brands are Samsung, Dell, and LG.  I've also heard good things about Asus and Viewsonic.  Samsung is definitely king of the hill right now though.

Samsung

I have a 17 inch from about 5 years ago that still runs perfectly.

I unplugged it from my PC and set it across the room, plugged into a new outlet.

About 2 hours of sitting there doing nothing, it turned on and now (for about an hour) continues to flash different colors.

Could it have been a heat issue? I just moved it yesterday. It's setup next to my PC which is underneath a credenza, so the back of it sits next to a pretty big heat source. I have a fan blowing the hot air out, though.

Almost certainly the inverter then, it's probably repairable but getting someone else to do it would end up costing more than a new monitor, despite the parts probably only totalling 90p.

As Sheffers said, Samsung are the daddies, I've got a 17" from back in 04 that still kicks the shit out of monitors today.
