Two things have been bothering me with my 4850:

1.  When folding, occasionally when the display is up, the screen freezes for about 8 seconds (complete freeze, no mouse response), then the screen flashes red with thin black lines down vertically before going black.  Then after another few seconds, the desktop, with folding display, comes up, and a dialog box with "VPU has detected a driver error/performed a rescue etc" pops up.  It then happens every now and then whenever the display is up (though more commonly with large scale molecule folding).

2.  After extensive use/extensive disuse of computer, I turn on screen (I don't have a screensaver, so I turn off the screen whenever I'm not using it to prevent damage) and find that whenever I click the left mouse button, the screen goes black for about half a second.  If I click anything, this happens.  Even when I click empty space on the desktop, the screen goes black.  Video card doctor utilities/VPU don't come up with any errors, just a screen that goes black now and then.  Restarting usually fixes this, but it's bloody annoying.

Any ideas as to what's going on?

There's your problem. Not exactly high quality shit.

And fah isn't exactly stable. Avoid running 3D apps whilst folding. If you get these errors randomly, try reinstalling your drivers.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The red and black error sounds like overheating artifacts to me.

Yeah, but haven't actually had a problem with the psu as of yet.  The specs are supposed to be much higher than required by the card.

But I'll reinstall drivers.

Furmark's stability test also didn't have any problems.  Hmm.
