The Irish took a lot of shit over the years. Basically discriminated as much as Black people minus slavery. The Irish surpassed their fucked up position in America and have contributed a large part of our traditions. I guess my dad can't bitch about there not being a white history month. All that immigrated to America died before I was a soldier, so they never talked to me about such things.
Especially with the WW-2 generation, they didn't talk war around non-veterans. To their minds, it would've been like talking about sex around the little children. Some things, you need a common frame of reference to even start having a discussion. Otherwise, your words are as likely as not to be grossly misunderstood.
Speaking strictly from my estimates, though.. Soldiers fight for their homeland - and homeland mostly means 'where your mom, wife and kids live' & 'where you grew up' for the most part. The traditions and ideals of your nation count for a great deal, but those too can be broken - hence the German(part 2) and Russian sides of my family immigrating to the US during/after WW-2.
The questions I would've liked to ask them are more along the lines of "What made you decide to leave your homeland for America?". The (2nd) German side left after WW-2. The Russian side left during WW-2.
