For 400AUD, you could probably get a decent-ish pair of active studio monitors. What stores are there in ausland?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Because that set of speakers is very good at what they're designed for.

For home cinema/gaming type usage they are pretty damn good. They're too bass heavy and have nothing in the mid range though...

For action movies, gaming etc. that's not an issue and the bass is about as good as you'll get for that money - which when thumping out big explosions in DTS is always good.

Although all that is assuming you have them connected digitally - if not they do sound very shit indeed.

For what they are they are a good set of speakers. Find a better 5.1 speaker set for that money...

A home cinema amp, a sub and five speakers ends up costing way, way more than them.

If his budget is 200€ they are good if the budget is 400€ they are not that good anymore.

Bert you can achieve better sound with a proper DAC>analog>Logitech5.1 than letting Logitechs do the converting digital to analog.

OP: I found a 5.1 system discussion (Logi z5500 gets mentioned as well)

The 10% distortion on the Z-5500s should be enough to keep anyone away. One tenth of the audio basically disappears. 2% is already really bad. Most serious systems are rated at <0.2%.

What you guys sometimes forget is the fact not everyone is super HIFI audiphile. I have listened to my friends Z-5500 and there is nothing wrong with them for gaming, movies and normal music (not some supah hifi audiophile stuff)

Anyone will hear a very clear difference between 10% and 0.1% distortion.

And no matter what, Logitech needs to get dick slapped for rating their power at that distortion, as the accepted standard is rating power at <0.1%, or in some cases 1%.

Was just pointing the fact not everyone needs a set ef Genelecs that cost €€€ for their PC.

In fact I my ooold Logitech 4.1 set is doing fine for anything I do when coupled with my sound card which is not exactly the top of the line.

Thats why you, being audionutty, should think a bit before making very wide statements for everyone else.

Not everyone needs the best of the best, but they deserve better than Logitech.

Exactly my point!

For the money and for what they are, the Z5500s are good. Yes they are flawed and have shit mid range, but they do have really rather good bass - which matters a lot when watching action movies or gaming.

You probably can get a much crisper 2.1 system for the money - but nothing directly comparable.

I have yet to see someone post a better directly comparable system - and I doubt I will. Just more audiosnobs just bashing people into massively overspending, like in this thread .Sup so helpfully found:

In that thread most people say they are perfectly good and the best for what they are - but there are also a bunch of audiosnobs - who in the end get the guy to increase his budget vastly ($400 to $1000).

If you want high quality music then they are not for you, a 2.1 system would be better - but if you want them for movies and gaming they're very good for the price.
