I live in the US on the east coast and I have heard conflicting stories about who is entitled to get unemployment benefits and wanted to ask everyone what the rules are.

I know that if you quit a job, for any reason, you are not able to apply for unemployment benefits or am I wrong?

What about getting fired from a job and what reasons would still allow someone to get unemployment benefits?
Like if I come in stinky drunk and throw my feces at my boss etc or if I just quit doing a good job or call in sick 5 times a week etc.

The only time I have ever collected unemployment benefits was 8 years ago and it was because I was laid off because my job got sent over seas so I have zero knowledge on this subject and any info you guys post will be greatly appreciated.

My goal is to get fired and be able to qualify for benefits so I can finish some training which will enable me to get a much better job with much better pay. I do not plan on being a deadbeat for very long, just long enough to accomplish my goal.

thanx again for any info that gets posted.

You may get more solid help by calling your state unemployment office.

And, just personally, avoid gambling on the government to give you money.

depends on the state, I claimed Virginia because thats where my company paid me from and it was higher than Maines

most states require you to have been hired for a certain period of time.
you gotta be unemployed for 2 weeks i think
and you have to have applied to 3 jobs, I would always apply to the union hall, so i would just repeat myself 3 times when calling in
find out if their is a website you can go to, much easier than calling to set it up first time tbh
get it direct deposit, if they send you the debit card, sometimes they add hidden charges whenever you access it, like paying 1.50 to check the balance.
If they catch you cheating it, pay them back asap. they will arrest you for 150 bucks.. but i owed like 3500 heh(long story short, i got paid on wednesday, unemployment goes sunday to sunday, so instead of having to wait an entire 2.5 weeks to claim I tried to claim after 2 weeks of my last paycheck and got caught but I paid it back and never heard another word, then claimed unemployment again the next week)

Here in Washington State, the rule is that if you commit a malicious act, you can not get benefits. If you quit your job, same thing. It can't be something blatant.

Navigating the Economic Downturn

As promised in past communications, when the management team determines that actions need to be taken to help us navigate the current economic downturn, I will communicate with you as rapidly as possible. We are doing everything in our power to reduce expenses to remain competitive in the marketplace, but our current results and forecasts indicate that further expense reduction actions are necessary.

First, the 401(k) Company match will be suspended for the remainder of 2009. This suspension will be effective on April 12, 2009 for the April 24 pay date. At this time, we do not anticipate reinstating the match anytime this year nor do we see the possibility of reimbursing the lost match funding. Many companies had already taken this action at the end of last year. We delayed this suspension as long as possible, continuing the match funding through a very difficult first quarter.

Second, we are instituting a salary reduction for the remainder of 2009. Employees making $46,392 or less will receive a 3 percent salary reduction, while those making $50,000 or more will receive a 10 percent reduction. For those making between $46,392 and $50,000, your salary reduction will be prorated between the maximum 10 percent and the minimum 3 percent reduction. It is unlikely we will be able to reimburse the salary lost during this reduction period. The salary reductions will be effective on April 12, 2009 for the April 24 pay date.

Third, effective immediately and for the remainder of 2009, the following programs will be suspended: the annual Anniversary Recognition program, the Service Award (5-year service milestone) program, the President’s Award of Excellence, the Star Award, and the Significant Contributor Award. We highly value your contributions to Pacer and we will continue non-monetary recognition of your achievements. The Tuition Reimbursement program will also be suspended effective immediately; however, per the program guidelines, we will reimburse tuition for employees who are currently attending a pre-approved class.

We know these difficult actions will place an additional burden on your personal finances. We do not want to reduce compensation or programs that employees value, but we must respond quickly to this difficult economic climate, and make *** competitive in the marketplace for the long term. In addition to these actions, future organizational changes will be necessary to adjust to the projected reduced level of demand in a number of business areas.

In upcoming communications, I will be sharing with you more specifics about what each one of us can do to work together to overcome this crisis and put *** back on the road to prosperity. You can view additional information now by clicking on this Q&A link.

We appreciate your dedication and continued hard work for *** in these most difficult of times.

I knew I would catch some flak for this post but I do not feel bad for wanting to do this, when my plan is complete I will end up putting even more money back into the system with my new higher paying job.
