U.S. District Judge James Selna issued the ruling Friday after a 16-month legal battle between student Chad Farnan and his former teacher, James Corbett.

Farnan sued in U.S. District Court in 2007, alleging that Corbett violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment by making repeated comments in class that were hostile to Christian beliefs.

The lawsuit cited more than 20 statements made by Corbett during one day of class, all of which were recorded by Farnan, to support allegations of a broader teaching method that "favors irreligion over religion" and made Christian students feel uncomfortable.

During the course of the litigation, the judge found that most of the statements cited in the court papers did not violate the First Amendment because they did not refer directly to religion or were appropriate in the context of the classroom lecture.

Instead, he plans to ask the court to prohibit Corbett from making similar comments in the future. Farnan's family would also like to see the school district offer teacher training and monitor Corbett's classroom for future violations, Monk said.

What a little cunt. I had plenty of teachers in high school and now in college that were either really religious things or nonreligious and I've had teachers say things that could be considered insulting to either a race, nationality, or religion and nobody ever complained or brought a lawsuit. Kid didn't really win anything but just lost it a bit more for Christians.

I agree, with the OP too. People from both sides of everything say shit all the time. It goes to show you how much of a joke it was, considering the ruling effectively did nothing; and was probably only covered by maybe a local paper besides Fox news.

You beat me to it posting this.

I am not saying that the school should teach either way, but I do think that the teacher should at least not beat down others' beliefs. The kid had a valid point about the 1st Amendment. The teacher bashed his beliefs, and should not have done that.

I might think it was an issue if he had sued for money, but as he did not, it is a non-issue. No big deal IMHO.

Was that a separation of church and state issue as well?

You can argue that evolution shouldn't be taught in classrooms at all if you want to go down the path of State vs Church seperation.

A history teacher is not meant to mold minds but present information and allow the student to make up their own mind on the matter. Seems like the child doesn't comprehend that.

Then it can be argued that any mention of religion in a government funded environment should be banned, how do you feel about a ban on the Pledge of Allegiance due to the statement "under God" ?

Never heard of the Flying Spaghetti Monster? He shouldn't have sued. I didn't agree with a lot of what my teachers said and I didn't complain or sue I Turned the other cheek. It was extremely petty of the student and his parents. He should have just silently disagreed and took refuge in the fact that he was right in his mind.

Well, maybe he shouldn't. I wouldn't have if in any case. My point is that there was a violation. Are we sue happy? ..myea. He wasn't really asking for anything of substance anyways.
