Couple things here:

1) When playing BF2 on a wireless network (tried it on both my family's network and a friend's network, so it doesn't seem to be network specific), I get a ridiculously high ping and a 1- to 2-second flash of the "problem with your connection" dialog. I imagine this is PunkBuster screenshots or maybe just my network card being screwy. I know you can reduce the interval of taking PB screenshots, but that doesn't stop them altogether (if that is even the problem in the first place). Any tests I could run or ways to fix this?

2) (This problem has happened only on my family's wireless network) When playing BF2 on my Vista installation, as soon as I click the Multiplayer tab to search for a game, the entire computer hangs and I have to do a hard restart. This hasn't happened before, and the only things I changed between now and the last time it worked was changing my sound settings to 2.0 to 5.1 and connecting to a wireless network instead of using a wired connection. Don't know why that would crash the entire computer though.

3) I am unable to connect to the network when using one of those things that plugs into a power outlet and you connect an ethernet cable from that to the computer. The computer will not give a warning that a cable is unplugged; instead, the connection will just have some warning or something, like it can't get to the internet.

[Clearly, I can avoid the first two problems if I could fix the third.]

Thank you, bf2s tech team

1. Wireless is shit. Using it gaming requires you to have a pretty decent wireless connection, since latencies are so crucial. If you want to check your signal you could use something like NetStumbler, but I don't really see the point.

2. Are you sure it's crashed? Not just hanging for a really long time?

3. Afraid I know fuck all about networking over power cables.

My advice - use an ethernet lead and all will be well. Alternatively your networking over power should work fine - but I don't understand it enough to help you with that much.

3) Are you talking about a surge protector with internet line?

re: 2) I'm 99% sure. I ctrl+alt+del and nothing happens. Sound repeats very quickly. Mouse is unresponsive.

re: advice; That's what I used to do, just run a long cable through the house. At that time, my room was right down the hall from the router. But my family upgraded the internet (and got cable tv as well), so the router/modem is next to the tv, which is on the other end of the house; sucks. [One of these days I'll try networking the whole house]

No. It's a little device that plugs into a power outlet and has an ethernet socket on it, which you connect one end of the cable to (the other being the PC of course). I was using this a few months ago when my family's internet was upgraded and it was fine. But now it's not working at all. Guess I'll have to try calling their tech support.

I think he's talking about this sort of thing.

yeah, it's called a powerline adapter.  normally you have at least two powerline devices in a network - a master, and a slave.  the master handles the main connection.  the slave sorta "reads" it from any wall outlet.  are these two synced?  i know for the ones i have (Panasonic HD-PLC) i had to plug them into the same wall socket and hold down a button for a couple seconds.  then i could use them wherever in the house.

I suppose they might've gotten out of sync. The powerline adapter was working fine after the guy installed everything, but that was a while ago and I'm the only one who's used it.

Guess I'll have to call tech support
