How do I find my internet speed?

Not the download/upload rate but the actual speed such as 8mb/s, 16mb/s etc.

Check your ISPs website compared to what you have/pay?

Type your routers IP into your web browser, it should say it in there. Mine does.

I know the IP can vary, but mine is 192.168.1.254 so it's worth a try for you.

Are You sure you're looking hard enough? Maybe there's an overview/information section cause I would be amazed if it didn't say the speed in there. Only other option is check online as Winston suggested, or do a speed test and what the result is post it here, eg: if you've got a 200kbs it's effectively a 2mb connection or 300kbs it's 3mb.

Mine is 760kbs for a 7.6Mb connection.

Yeah, I know it's different for certain brands that why I said it can vary, but here in Ireland there's not many makes of router about and I have used a few and helped a few friends with theirs and it was the same IP as mine.

Honestly the number you said is easier, I don't see why everyone doesn't use it.

well heres a test on speedtest

https://www.speedtest.net/result/521774700.png

but it's different for every server so I don't see how that's going to give an accurate number

Well, you want to pick a server as close to you as possible. Cause that way you know it's as slow as the connection would get(not taking into account contention or anything like that). The broadband you have likely states how on paper you have a faster connection than 22MB maybe at around 25MB. But you're only getting effectively 22mb from it, the closer you are to the actual ISP centre that's providing you the service the faster actual speeds will be to what you wanted. When you got the broadband it would have said this in fine print:) *Actual speeds may vary* or something very similar would be the way it was put.

For me when I do the speed test I get a 6.4mb connection.
https://www.speedtest.net/result/521776595.png

And I do usually download at about 640Kbs, but I do see it get to the 700's sometimes too. My upload is shit from that but I think my brother is uploading in the other room.

Edit:
The best sure way to find out, check with your folks if you live at home how much the payment is for the cable. Go on to Comcasts website,  type in your address and match up how much you pay with the offers it shows you. That's the best sure way to find out.

Not so much sir, that's .76 Mb.

Your router won't tell you the intended speed from your ISP, only your ISP can tell you. Maybe, MAYBE, if your modem is from your ISP it might tell you. Usually, you can connect to it with '192.168.100.1'.

No, that's only to your computer, it's actually 192.168.0.1

This.

Your ISP will know what the theoretical maximum speed of your connection is, as it should be stated somewhere in the contract/plan. Then you'll need to do one of those speed test things to determine what you practically get.

For example, my laptop gets the wireless signal from our router.. which is rated to broadcast at speeds up to 54mbit/s. But that means nothing, since my connection is technically 24mbit/s. However, practically I get some piss poor fraction of that cause I live far from the ISP's local hub/distribution centre/whateverthetermis.

Modem. Modem. Not router. They are two different devices. 192.168.0.1 is a popular IP for the router. Not the modem.

Edit: I'm still trying to figure out your response. "No, only to your computer" makes no sense. Home routers use a /24 subnet, 192.168.100.1 is a different network; if the router assigned that IP to your computer it simply wouldn't work.

If it's DSL, it's called a DSLAM. If you're not on DSL, distance is not your problem.

At least over here, it's very popular with modem/router combo units.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Not .0 - that'd address the whole subnet.

Just run ipconfig from a cmd prompt, that'll show the gateway address, which'll be the address of the router.

Now I'm confused. How come that works for me even though I normally use 192.168.1.254? (They take me to the same place)

What do you mean? Advertised on my IPS's website says 7.6Mb, so the speed is about 760kbs download. Just out of general interest as I want to get this right. I'm confused by your statement.

Also, why do they use different IP's? Is it a router manufacturers decision or is it one by the ISP? I've always wondered that.
