My friend bought me a Sony turntable/record player while on vacation.  The thing is that it's very quiet and based on my basic knowledge of audio components I have to think that the capacitor may be bad or something.

We opened it up and looked at it and it only had a single capacitor, a fuse, and these 4 bridge looking things.

The capacitor was 470 Microfarad and 16v and was by a company named Lelon I think, I couldn't read it very well.

So what would be a good replacement for this?  I would like to give it one that is more powerful and therefore better quality and louder than the original.

You did connect it to a phono preamp, right?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Oh yeah, turns out we needed some kind of receiver, so we tried it out at his house and it worked fine.

Still, would there be a way to upgrade the cap?  I always wanted to try it.

You order another 470µF/16V capacitor. Given how simple a turntable is, you probably can't 'upgrade' the capacitor in any way.
