Well?

Some say it's illegal, some say it ain't. I dunno. I'd rather Cycle on the pavement than on the road any day, unless there is a cycle lane.

It is against the law.  Furthermore, it's also incredibly annoying when some twat dressed in spandex like a poor mans Lance Armstrong comes flying at you on the pavement because he's too scared of traffic.  I hate cyclists on the pavement.

"Cycling on pavements is prohibited by Section 35 of The Highways Act 1980.  The Act provides that it is an offence for a person to wilfully ride upon any footpath.  Any such person found committing this offence is liable to pay a fine in addition to any damages for injury caused to another person.  Where a person is found to be in contravention of this section, a police constable or special community support officer will issue them with a fixed penalty notice."

Cycling, skateboarding, rollerskating, Rollerblading are all illegal on footpaths unless you are under the age of 12 in NSW, laws differ state to state.

Already answered, but think about it...if you're on the road you can go faster as you don't have to worry about dodging pedestrians, you don't have to stop and give way at every junction (obviously you follow the rules of the road, but you are higher up the pecking order than if you were on the pavement), and old ladies won't look at you like you're a muppet.

It's not that big a deal, and I say that even though the roads where I live are full of holes and drivers can be nuts; you just need to have some balls!

Ride wherever is safest, if the roads are dangerous it beats being dead. Cops are also pretty understanding if you get stopped.

Me too...that's when I started wearing a helmet, didn't stop me riding on the road though.

Also, Ghetto, if you're going at any sort of speed and hit a pedestrian, there's still a risk of injury to both of you; it may seem 'safer', but there's a reason it's illegal

So don't ride fast around pedestrians.

EDIT: If you ride safely, no one gives a shit, it's only if you ride like a twat that the cops get pissed off and fine you.

Cyclists are second only to horse riders on my 'get the fuck off the road' list.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

Bike helmets only protect you from sharp things on the ground, they provide almost no protection from falling whatsoever

I usually bike on the roads though, where I live theres tons of room for bikes and cars on the road and there are bike paths all over the place.  When people bike downtown during rush hour on narrow streets it drives me nuts though

The majority of bike accident related deaths are due to head trauma from contact with the road. It won't stop you breaking some ribs, but it will save your life.

Depends on the helmet. I've had a few crashes on the mountain where, if I didn't have a helmet as a shock absorber, I'd have had a concussion at the bare minimum.

But if you get a cheapy little shit with flowers or Donald Duck on it, may you rest in peace.

Nope, I worked for an engineering firm that did testing on bicycle helmets for the Canadian Ministry and they found even the top helmets absorb less than 5% of the impact of falling, so pretty much insignificant.  Think about it, what could under an inch of padding do against a 150-200lb person falling? Practically nothing.
Plus, it does nothing to protect against neck injuries which could be far more severe.

I'm not bashing helmets, I wear one.  I'm just saying they do very little to protect you, they're very overrated.

But the majority of that impact is going to go into the rest of your body, not your head, so that 5% is significant. I'm a downhill mountain biker, and I have several friends who I'm pretty sure would not be here today, or would best case scenario be rather more retarded than they already are if it were not for that inch of padding. I think they do a lot more than it seems they might.

i cycle on the pavements when they're empty. if i see people on them (that i might have to go around/inconvinance) ill hop onto the road and go around.

no person i know has ever been more than stopped and warned by the police. then again i only cycle when im living in my little village over the holiays.
