If you combine gaining weight and putting on muscle you'll become bulkier and -more attractive-. Some people dislike being really really skinny because it's quick unattractive at a certain level, skinny people also get worn out easier and will probably sleep more during the day etc etc.

Also, if people want to put on any muscle you need to eat as much food as you can otherwise your body simply doesn't have the fuel to burn. I eat around 1000-1500 calories extra a day because I'm on a fairly intense workout plan and I simply don't have the energy if I don't eat enough.

BMI is not the best representation of an indivduals health.  It's a rough start at best.  If you really want a good assessement you'll do something like this:

LIFESTYLE TESTS

o Full medical history and lifestyle questionnaire
          o Height and weight measurement
          o Body mass index
          o Body fat percentage
          o Hip to waist ratio
          o Nuffield Body Composition Index
          o Hydration levels
          o Urine analysis
o Blood biochemistry and haematology profile
          o Vision tests
          o Anti-oxidant level measurement
          o Computerised spinal assessment
          o Lung function test
o Physiological measurement of resilience to stressors
          o Blood pressure measurement
          o Resting ECG
o Dynamic cardiovascular test measuring ECG and blood pressure during activity
          o Assessment of fitness level
          o Cardiovascular risk score

ADDITIONAL TESTS AS INDICATED

o Chest x-ray (if clinically indicated)
o Bowel cancer test (for those aged 45 years and over)

For male clients:

          o Testicular examination
o Prostate cancer blood test (for those aged 50 years and over)

For female clients:

          o Breast examination
o Pelvic examination and cervical smear
o Thyriod stimulating hormone blood test (for those aged 50 years and over)
o High vaginal swab (if clinically indicated)

OPTIONAL TESTS

o Mammography (where purchased and usually appropriate for those aged 40 years and over)
o 64 slice CT scans (where purchased, at selected locations)

ALL FOLLOWED BY:

o Full clinical examination and consultation with a doctor
o Discussion on findings and those test results that are immediately available
o Counselling by the doctor on preventive health actions
o Detailed lifestyle coaching and a personalised action plan by a physiologist
o Case management of any health issues identified during the session
o Written personalised report with all relevant health fact sheets within two weeks of attending

105 KG and 6 foot. I was 112 about 4 months ago though - decided that pure heavy weight training was good enough for me without any cardio to burn off the extra fat :p So now I run as much as possible and only train one facet of my body every day so I don't overwork myself.

Seems pretty solid, my only objection would be to do more arms working, but seeing as you'll be shifting weights to/from other machines during other days, I guess it counts as part of a work out. I try to let a muscle relax for 2-3 days before using it again, a week would be a bit too long for me. Though having constant CMF every day bar the time before I work out that group is pretty annoying, not so much of a problem around my shoulders, but I hate sitting down and having that ugly strechy feeling in the back of my thighs.

Yeah it's around 230 pounds, I have a bit of puppy fat around my belly that needs to go, but apart from that I'm fitter than 90% of the kids at my school.

I wish I could type a routene, but I'm too lazy and generally work on the idea of "If it doesn't hurt, work it out." Though endurance running is my next target, a 20 km run is a pretty solid target I'd like to work towards getting in the next 3 months.

A day of rest is typically fine.

When we did offseason in HS, we alternated every day.

Clean, Lunges, Triceps, Abs
then
Bench, Deadlift, Squats, Lats

Cardio every day.

If you're going to hit the protein powder make damn sure you have a solid cardio regime otherwise you'll just end up gaining fat round your belly. I tried the whole 'bulk up', 'i want bigger biceps' stage a few months ago and didn't have the dedication because I found the gym so fucking boring. I'm fairly thin but don't look it because I've been doing sport my entire life (given award for top athlete at my school when I left ). I play football, rock climb, squash, cross-country ski, run, lacrosse, sail, cricket.

My advice to you if you're like me and find out that you hate continuously doing reps inside a sweaty gym is to get involved in a sports team. I always advise people who are looking to bulk up to look into rowing. They stick you through a bloody intense work out scheme and it's good at building up your arms, legs and shoulders/back. As soon as you're doing exercise you'll constantly be hungry so like other said make sure you're eating enough.

To the gymers: I'm looking at bulking up my chest and shoulders to fill out my shirt. I don't want to do it at a gym and was wondering if it was possible through any special type of pushup/pull up?

Edit: Or look into joining your local climbing club. I find the best/most intense muscle work out comes from pulling yourself up over an overhang. It also works many muscles simultaneously rather than just focusing on one group....and it's incredibly fun.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you - i've got a pullup bar as well and do various things - have gained a shitload of upper body strength but it doesn't show much. I don't mind going to the gym here but I don't really have a workout buddy.

If you have dumbbells, you do pushups with those, or if you have something heavy (like a plate) put it on your back and do pushups. I can't imagine too much of a pullup goes towards the pecs - overhand really works out the shoulders and underhand feels a lot more bicep and core.

Would like to know the opinions of the members here on that as well.

The wide grip pullup will work your shoulders, upper backs and lats.  Close grip pullups will focus on your biceps.

You can change it up by using overhand, underhand and a mixture of one overhand and one underhand.  Hitting and stressing your muscles from differnt angles will accelerate muscle growth and strength.  Try also using a weighted belt or hold a light dumbell between your feet to change the stress more.

It's an excellent exercise but you're mistaken it will do anything for your core.

Eat as much as possible and do not forget your 3 meals a day. You also can eat some sweets/vegetables/fruits between your meals.
Remember try to eat a lot of vegetables and drink water or any kind of juice (forget soft drinks)

When I do underhand, I go all the way down to almost a hang before going all the way back up. I often need my legs and core to go all the way back up, and I can feel my abs when doing this. Granted it's not your typical chin just below the bar then back up, but I deffo feel it working something in the core.

Trying to do it with legs parallel to the ground is hard as hell too.

edit: clarification

it's a misconception to believe that if you feel something....then you must be doing something right.  I hear it all the time, say if i kick you if the nuts, is that going to work for you?

Maybe your form is wrong? i don't go all the way down when doing pulls up, I come down to the point where i am still stressing the back/shoulders but i am not hanging like a derranged baboon.  Also look up when you're doing pullups, this places emphasis on your lats.

Lastly form is everything, if you're not doing it right, then don't do it at all.

I didn't say it was "doing something right". I just said I feel it working. I know that it's not always a good thing :/

I do understand the correct form, I just have a wider range of motion than typical - IE go down further. My head doesn't just barely go down, my arms go down to about 135 degrees (IE almost full hang). Considering my grip is spread just fine, I don't see the issue. If this is an issue though I'd like to know though, seriously.

Also I forgot about the looking up bit, thanks.
