My house has cable internet through our modem and router that are in an upstairs bedroom.  The wireless on the router doesnt get a good signal in the basement, so i was looking into buying a second modem to connect to the coaxial cable that is already downstairs (we dont have ethernet wired down there)

my question is, would i be able to do this without having to pay our service provider?  would i just be able to call them so they could recognize the modem?

Get someone else to do it. Tell them they'll need a Wireless AP and a long Ethernet Cable.

Well my advice would be to call your service provider.  Different companies have different policies.

Ok. It's 5AM here, and this is going nowhere. So frick it.

Splitting a Coaxial cable (your internet cable) without authorization from your telco is a no-no. Paying for another connection is just pointless, too.

You could boost the power of the wireless routers' signal, but you don't want the FCC knocking on your door because your neighbor's mobile phone doesn't work.

Instead, it's easier to just add a second wireless point, somewhere else in the house.

You can buy (I don't know if they still sell them now..) a "Wireless Access Point", aka a Wireless AP. You plug an Ethernet cable (from your network) into the back of it, and it will share that connection. The easiest way is just buying one of these with a long Ethernet cable for it too, and finding a place in your house that is in close vicinity of where you need access. It doesn't have to be the same room, just close.

You said you have a wireless router. I'm assuming that the router has more than one Ethernet port, and one of those ports is free. The only tweaking needed is disabling of DHCP on the Wireless AP. The DHCP service on your router already gives out addresses, and It'll cause a problem If your Wireless AP tries to give out addresses too.

or...

JUST RUN AN ETHERNET CABLE.

The difference is, running a cable or picking up an AP will give better speeds and won't make you look like a prat.

IMO.

Ethernet over Power does have it's uses, but is overpriced, and it's only suitable for a single computer, unless you run an AP off that.
