This is not entirely true:

The Australian wrote:

It is not the first time US presidents have spoken directly to students.
Former president George W. Bush was filmed at a school asking children to donate to help in Afghanistan.
A speech by his father, George Bush Sr, was broadcast nationally from a Washington high school in 1991.
Mr Bush urged students to study hard, avoid drugs and ignore peers, "who think it's cool not to be smart".

I really don't get it. here in Germany it's perfectly normal for politicians of most partys to speak in schools or universities and noone cares. noone forces anybody to listen, and it can't be wrong to consider all sides and make own decisions, even at a young age.

And remember, when the puberty starts, most kids do the exact opposite of what their parents did. raise them extremely conservative and they might become liberals just to piss you off, and the other way round.

Most of ya missed the point
In a National Press release, from the White House :PRESIDENT OBAMA DELIVERS NATIONAL ADDRESS TO AMERICA’S SCHOOCHILDREN [Before they corrected it a day later...]
On November 14, 1988, Reagan addressed and took questions from students from four area middle schools in the Old Executive Office Building. According to press secretary Marlin Fitzwater, the speech was broadcast live and rebroadcast by C-Span, and Instructional Television Network fed the program “to schools nationwide on three different days.” Much of Reagan’s speech that day covered the American “vision of self-government” and the need “to keep faith with the unfinished vision of the greatness and wonder of America” but in the middle of the speech

Yes but places like AUS and Germany especially aren't ruled by a two-party system.  Germany in particular enjoys party coalitions, whereby to gain passage of bills, parties must build alliances with other coalitions.  Here in the US we are dominated by a two-party system.  This results in a ridiculous amount of political posturing, by the politicians themselves and by the people stupid enough to proclaim blind alliegence to one of the two bastard children of the Hydra that is US government.  So when somebody from one party does something, the goosestepping politicians and constituents of the opposite party deride it in some form.  It is pathetic and pedantic.

I agree with that, but I guess what I really meant was: Why do parents consider not letting their child listen to something a politician from one of the big parties has to say? I could understand that (and would probably do the same) when it was a speaker from a radical party (NPD, the offspring of the NSDAP here in germany comes to mind). Now please don't get me wrong, I know that your children are your business and I have no right to tell you what to do, but seriously, what's wrong with being open minded? Afterwards there is still the possibility to speak about it with the child and tell him or her why the speech was bullshit.

But for someone to see how irrational the right has become, rivaling if not surpassing the left in the early 2000's, that makes them atleast somewhat sane.

https://static.bf2s.com/files/user/25206/712%283%29.jpgI really don't understand the reason the WH sent out lesson plans at all.  I don't care other than it seems odd.  Yes they are optional as is the actual watching, but I do not trust Obama not to use a situation like this to his advantage in some way.  I also don't really care, mainly cause my kids won't be in school yet on the 8th.

I do agree with keeping your eye on the ball though, and this could be one of Obama's many slight of hand moments.  I am keeping tabs on Van Jones and the diversity Czar, Mark Lloyd.  Mainly Lloyd right now as Jones is most likely history as long as the media picks up the stories.

So how will the Obamite teachers incorporate this into their lesson plan?  Good to know and glad my kid won't be subject to retribution from such an 'educator'.

My daughter does not like Obama already. She's worse than me with the criticism. I'm not in the least bit worried about "indoctrination". We talk about everything of substance when it comes to school... things that are more frightening than our CINC telling our kids to do their best and try hard. I guess I might be worried about brainwashing if we didn't have daily dialogue, or if I wasn't confident in my ability to offer my view against  the "every mans a servant" ideology. I'm sure I'll see his speech as well, and I've already read the optional "menu" of activities the DOE put together. I'm taking this as an opportunity to teach my daughter about open dialogue, even if it's disagreeable. As a parent I know school doesn't end when the bell rings. She is going to have to learn how to listen to opposing views if she is going to be successful in life. The earlier you teach them this lesson the easier it is to learn. I look forward to redressing his points if I don't agree with them. But it's tough to argue against doing your best in school. If Obama is asking for "help" I'll be sure to inquire as to what exactly that help is and address it directly. I'm not going to take her out of school, there is no reason to. I welcome the opportunity to point out a flawed idea to her. .. of course, she already see's through most of it.

If Obama's gonna be trying to push his political agenda on kids, I'll be a bit miffed. And yes I would've been miffed with Reagan or Bush doing the same.

If he's just telling kids to stay in school and work hard and consider astronauts as role models instead of Britney Spears or Soulja Boy, then more power to him. It's about time someone who almost every youth respects told us to stop fucking around.

Yea well, that's AK's problem. They elected her. These are the reasons I'm for smaller government. So I don't have to pay for their debacle. This huge national debt we are leaving to our kids/grandkids is a real reason to be upset.

Yay, righties just gave a whole generation of kids who couldnt give more of a shit to skip school and get stoned for a few days...

2001-2009 "Terrorist sympathizers, anti-military, pro-death loving pussy ass hippies

2009 - present "Communists, socialists, dont send your kids to school holy fuck the presidents gonna brainwash them"

Kinda funny how the tables have turned really... I remember pretty vividly less than two years ago the dialogue was practically the opposite from the two sides.  Except now its healthcare reform.  *shrugs*
