A bill that could make paying for college much easier moved one step closer to reality Thursday.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act by a 253-171 vote. It calls for an overhaul of current college financial aid programs, and now heads to the Senate for consideration.

The bill would eliminate private lenders from the student loan process and increase Pell Grant amounts, among other things.

Doug Severs, the director of financial aid and scholarships at Oregon State University, praised the passage of the bill. He said it would enable OSU to offer more students assistance and increase students' financial aid packages.

Desiree Segura, a senior majoring in philosophy at OSU, has received financial aid every year. She said she is more than $40,000 in debt because of loans, despite holding down a job while attending classes.

A member of the Oregon Students Association and the United States Students Association, Segura was thrilled to hear the bill passed the House. She said it will ease the financial burden on students in so many ways.

"The Oregon Students Association did a study awhile ago on how much you would have to work while going to school to pay for it," Segura said. "It was like 55 hours a week on top of going to class full-time. Not to mention any other activities. It's ludicrous. It's impossible."

IMO education is a great long term investment. The more people will can get through college the better. Just as long as they don't major in things like philosophy. It's the most useless degree right along with Communications and liberal arts.

Seriously if you're majoring in any of those three you should not be allowed a student loan.

If it's a loan it's none of your business as to what course they do.

You can't do a damn thing with a degree in Philosophy. It's useless in the job market.

I'm majoring in engineering, and I'm getting a 'free ride'. Only took 4 1/2 years in the Army to earn it

Not really the point though is it? I agree it's a waste of time, but it's not like the taxpayer is paying them to go.

If the government is giving them a loan to go to school for philosophy and they end up with thousands of dollars in loans and unable to get a job, end up defaulting on their loan or declaring bankruptcy, the tax payer money is wasted.

Agreed.  If you're smart enough and devoted enough to make it through that, cost shouldn't be the issue.  We need doctors...  and a lot more than we produce annually with the current system.

Useless as their degree is, they're still more employable than someone without a degree and therefore able to get a job and pay it off.

To a degree (no pun intended), but depending on the current economic situation, a person with a philosophy degree may be considerably less employable than someone with something like a business degree.

Wow...so the government is going to determine who 90% of the college loans go out to?  I hope you're going for a degree in green engineering or did some public service before asking for the money.

Make college free or almost free. An elitist education system is the root of most problems today.

ANYONE can go to college in this country you idiot. There's nothing elitist about it unless you're crying because you couldn't get into an Ivy League school

But not everyone can afford it you idiot. That's what she means when she says it's elitist, in the fact that only the rich could pay for it.

Then there are people that even the Ivy League education can't help. Daddy should have his money back.

John, you're really digging yourself into a hole here.  Anytime you make such sweeping assumptions about opportunity, reality will find a way to contradict you.

Absolutely not. Work hard and earn a scholarship. If you can't do that, join the military and get the GI Bill. If you don't want to do that you can join Americorps or the Peace Corps and get money that way. As a last resort you can take out loans. Or, you can do what millions of Americans have done over the years: Work while going to school to pay for tuition. I know that last one is a real brain zinger.

There are a million different ways to pay for college and unless we're talking MIT there really isn't a whole lot of difference between a state school and a private college except the name on the diploma. You could work hard and get the same or better education at Ohio State as you could at Harvard. It's all about effort and priorities.

You're forgetting that the children of rich parents get at advantage over those who aren't so lucky.
Is that fair?
Only rich kids get to be doctors, don't have to join the military?

Should life be fair?

I was born dirt poor and I'll be finishing up college in the spring. My younger brother graduated 3 years ago and has a job as a 3rd mate on an Offshore Supply Vessel. He took out loans to pay for school and he's making more than enough money to cover them along with all of his other bills and still has plenty to party like the drunken sailor he is while home.

Sure, growing up with wealth makes a lot of things easier in life but I got over my jealousy a long time ago. They got 'lucky'. Who cares? My kids will be 'lucky' one day.

Your kids will be lucky because you worked hard. Not everyone will have parents who work hard, even if the child is hard-working himself. The whole education system is designed to make the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor, sure there are a few cases, but nearly every instance, a person's socioeconomic status is going to be similar to that of their parents.
