http://www.gazettetimes.com/news/local/ … 03286.htmlA bill that could make paying for college much easier moved one step closer to reality Thursday.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act by a 253-171 vote. It calls for an overhaul of current college financial aid programs, and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
The bill would eliminate private lenders from the student loan process and increase Pell Grant amounts, among other things.
Doug Severs, the director of financial aid and scholarships at Oregon State University, praised the passage of the bill. He said it would enable OSU to offer more students assistance and increase students' financial aid packages.
Desiree Segura, a senior majoring in philosophy at OSU, has received financial aid every year. She said she is more than $40,000 in debt because of loans, despite holding down a job while attending classes.
A member of the Oregon Students Association and the United States Students Association, Segura was thrilled to hear the bill passed the House. She said it will ease the financial burden on students in so many ways.
"The Oregon Students Association did a study awhile ago on how much you would have to work while going to school to pay for it," Segura said. "It was like 55 hours a week on top of going to class full-time. Not to mention any other activities. It's ludicrous. It's impossible."
IMO education is a great long term investment. The more people will can get through college the better. Just as long as they don't major in things like philosophy. It's the most useless degree right along with Communications and liberal arts.
Seriously if you're majoring in any of those three you should not be allowed a student loan.
