Trial and error.. trial and error. We are fortunate to live in a time that lets us do this without film/development cost!

I like the D3's. If I wasn't so committed to Canon at this point I would consider it. I've been looking at some 5d Mark II's on ebay .

Trial and error? I'm not on to your brainwaves on this one. Explainnnn. Or draw a picture. Or sing?

you've got a big aperture on that new lense.
you have flash memory instead of film.

take the same picture, changing only the aperture size, and see where the sweet spot is.
oh, and pics or didn't  . . .
i really want a lens for low light - esp for shows - to take pics without a flash in low light and them to turn out sharp
and for stars at night i cant imagine a 2.X or so with a 30 sec exposure at night *drool*

my wide to tele(18-200 Quantaray) goes down to 3.5 and i've gotten good results with tripod for landscapes at night... but not at concerts.
i want more daddy!

a good wide angle with big ap is in my dreams. Nikon just came out with a AF-S DX-NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens. om nom.
i have the older wide angle zoom - AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED - i love that lens but not enough for low light on avg

any recs? mebbe i should just get a 50mm standard type. hrm.

I still know dick about this stuff, but as I was scoping for that lens I bought I happened to remember that I know a guy from the hockey arena where I was working at my spare time. This guy shoots hockey, footie, your yankee-doodle-dandy-football and some concerts. So anyways he told me that f2.8 is basically a recommended minimum at a hockey game for decent pix. I bought the one a tad above and I'm gonna take it for a test drive during the weekend. I'ma take pix with the basic 18-55 lens at the hockey game also so there's something to compare with.

The best way to learn is to get out there and do it! ..lol.

Well, people learn differently. Trial and error is the best way for me (and photography) at least.

Ohh, you now have a 70-200 f/2.8 lens. Nice!

Lol @ the trial and error thing.. yeaaah, there would have to be 10-15,000 photos I've taken that NO ONE will ever see cause they were just so crap

Thar we go. Pics added. So I took 1557 photos tonight. I deleted 1000 of them in the first sitting and that was the worst only. Poor quality stuff still there but hell if I'm continuing going through them. Been doing that for 2h now. Trial and error indeed... All in all I'm very satisfied since this was my first session with the new lens and first time taking pics with that camera at a hockeygame.

Sleep. Now.
