In all honesty, don't worry about compatibility.

32 bit programs can run in 64 bit, you just can't run 16 bit programs... but those are like ones designed for windows 3.1. If you are not running software designed for win 3.1 you will be fine. I think windows 7 is seeing a big rise in people using 64 bit... You shouldn't have any trouble with finding 64 bit drivers.

if you're using 16 bit software for anything... you have to start questioning whether you're making good use of your time

The x64 compatibility problem with 16 bit isn't so much that the program is 16 but some 32 bit software has a 16bit installer which will not work.  FOr the average user you probably won't run into this problem but some business apps may.

just be wary of iTunes on any windows x64 system

iTunes + x64 Windows = shitstorm
Previous versions of iTunes were problematic on x64 systems.
Current x64 version of iTunes works fine on Win7 x64.

Previous versions wouldn't install the optical drive component (Bonjour, was it?), couldn't burn discs, and had stability issues.

mhm the current one is working fine for me as well, Vista Ultimate x64.  but it was such a headache before...
