Getting "a disk read error" in two machines, booting from the windows cd doesn't help; it cannot find an OS on the drive.

I've got an RMA open with WD, anything else I should try?

Can you see the drive at all? From the BIOS setup screens, for example

si

Now it gives me BOOT MGR is missing.
Tried rebuilding it from the recovery prompt, but it cannot see any installation at all.

Edit: I also attempted to re-install windows, but it wont even begin to install.

Have you formated the drive?

Well, then, what are you waiting for? Unless you want to boot to another drive and try and re-index it to recover data.

Sounds like your data is fucked and you will need to reformat the drive. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if it works after that.

It even sounds dead when trying to install windows.

Anyone have experience with WD's RMA service? Will I be on this C2D 3GB 8600GT dinosaur until Christmas?

I'm running GDB now, its apparently finding files. I connected the drive to the machine im using now, and only found installation files. Apparently the drive is working? It even sounds different.

I'm confused as fuck. Guess Ill be reformatting later this afternoon.

Thanks for the help.

^lol.

I'm posting from a fresh install. Used GetDataBack, the only casualties were a few songs. Ipods ftw I guess.

I really should start imaging fresh installs. I'm going to have to dig up all of my game CD's to reinstall.

A 2Ghz E8600 and 3 gigs of 533Mhz DDR2 isn't old?

I even consider my Q9650 a bit old. I just prefer to put my cash in things that matter, like my volvo, rather than switching out cases because I can't decide which one I've fallen in love with.

yes.  my raptorX died after about 2.5 years of use.  I RMA'd it with the error code from the diag program on their website and they sent me a *new one with the same 5 year warranty.  the process went well, but it did take a little time since they don't send you the new one until they receive yours and verify its bad.  all-in-all a couple weeks.   I just got around to opening the "new" one when I did my win7 install and noticed the clear window on the raptorX has some minor scratches on it, so I'm guessing they sent me a refurb - but it still has the warranty.
