I need a decent card that will play the following games on high settings using 1680x1050 resolution and get about 100 fps for around $100 USD

Left 4 Dead
BF2
BF2142
CS:S

What do you guys recommend ?

NVIDIA 9800GT or ATI 4670

On second thoughts... An 8800GT is still pretty good, and anything newer won't be too much of an upgrade. Save the money for something better.

well more info about your system would help. mobo, os, ram etc.

this might help you

personally, since my psu is 305 W, i went with the HD 4670 because doesn't need additional power from the PSU.

oops
i rarely look at sigs doh

32 bit system means 4GB I/O addresses

if you plan to increase your RAM to 3GB then limit yourself to a sub 1GB video card; if you stay at 2 Gb then ok.

9800gt is just a rebranded 8800gt you wont see much improvement even at high resolutions.
Edit: im not 100% on this but if you buy the 512 version of the 9800gt you could go sli

my 8800GT died and now I am forced to use my old 8500GT (glad I kept it) so i need a new card that will compare to the 8800GT

I am not worried about it being any faster but i would like it to be as fast as my 8800GT

would this card be a good replacement ?

well like I said
a 1GB video card will limit your usable ram to about 2.5 GB if you ever wanted to increase your ram.

if your present card has GDDR2 the GDDR3 will be an improvement but not worth $100. otherwise it is pretty much the same card as you have now.
does Nvidia have a trade in program?

the 8800GT was GDDR3 and I think the 8500GT is GDDR2

I do not plan on upgrading my RAM, at least not with this system since I am running XP 32 bit  so I do not have a need for more RAM right now.

The dead 8800GT was an Evga and they do have a "step up" program but the card was not registered within the first 30 days which is required to qualify for that program, the same with the warranty since the card is older than 2 years.

I have to suck it up and buy a new card, I just want to be sure about it before I buy one.

Thank you guys for all the advice and info.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/bes … 464-8.html

this is the tom's hierachy chart for cards they consider better than your current, defunct card. each line is an improvement of the one below it. your 8500 GT is a further 12, yes 12, lines below the last listed above. so look for deals for the above cards and you can't go wrong. ( you can be unlucky though ). Upgrade advice is that any new card be 3-5 lines above the one you have to make it worthwhile and also watch you keep the same level within a generation. for example trading your 8500gt for a 220. it is an improvement but a lower end card than then the 260. i hope i explained that ok

I don’t recommend upgrading your graphics card unless the replacement card is at least three tiers higher. Otherwise, the upgrade is somewhat parallel and you may not notice a worthwhile difference in performance
the article said it better.
