So I made 2nd Lt a month ago or so, and after all that playing, I am only now having fun.  I used to only care about points, k/d, etc, but now when I play, its like, "I am gonna do whatever I feel like."  I joined a Mastuur server, and hopped into a Vodnik on the MEC.  I decided, I'd like to drive this thing around the map a few times for no reason.  Off I went, careening into the USMC flags, knocking over poor souls who got in my way.  I went through a crowd of like ten guys, and luckily none of them had an AT kit.  I left that spawn point and went for their flag with the tank when I saw it had spawned.  I managed to beat them to it, got in, and proceeded to finished the round with 33 kills and zero deaths.  I had more fun than ever and my best k/d ratio ever.  Ironic...
I think the stats element of the game is good and all, but it drove me and probably a lot of other people to play like you were working, seeing how much you can produce.  Since not caring I've been just trying to have fun (sounds revolutionary doesn't it?) and have recently found out that its VERY hard to do a barrel roll in a blackhawk.
Anyway, just wanted to sound off about the game.

Want to REALLY have fun?

Get a Humvee and spawn as an engineer.  Wait for the random idiot to shoot your Humvee (someone ALWAYS does) then drive into the water and start repairing yourself.  The idiot will get -1 Team Damage for the rest of the round (or until he gets kicked).  Sit back and watch as the guy types in "OMGWTF why is I gettin negtaive team pizzoints I AINT DOIN SHITS!!!", followed by a kick message.

Plus you'll get 4 or 5 repair points.

I totally understand how you felt before.  All I can think about it making my stats better, but really no one even cares!  I like to just sit as a sniper and pick off people who have no idea where I am...  Thats fun.  I used to do that in the 1942 days all the time.  Your right though, not worrying about points or anything really makes the game a lot more fun.

Hah thats funny.  I wonder how many ways there are to have fun (excepting anything to do with killing people).  I like riding around in the humvees and jumping ramps and stuff, thats always fun.
When I was going for 50k points, I was a little over 1k away one day.  So I got a case of beer and  decided, ok I gotta get this promotion (to get the last of the unlocks, wanted the P90 which isn't that great anyway).  I stayed up all night, and fell 200 points away.  I was a medic and kept reviving like mad.  Had several rounds of 100 points just from revivies in a row.  By the end of the night I was wondering if it was worth it, being a little drunk (well a lot actually after that many beers) and thinking, man if I keep this up Im gonna have a beer gut (ok a bigger one than I got now).
I don't know what my responsibilities/benefits/etc are for being a 2nd LT.  I guess the pay is the same (zero actually).
You know though, I did an analysis of how much BF2 REALLY costs.  Sure theres the 50 bucks you pay for it, but at minimum wage the 300 hours I've spent playing comes out to over 1500 bucks!  Essencially I paid 1500 bucks (in opportunity cost of course) to be a 2nd LT and get to play with all the weapons.  Think about that!  It costs over a thousand dollars to play with the whole game!
Now that I am in it just for fun, I don't play NEARLY as much.  I used to play every day, maybe two hours a day.  Now I play probably two or three times a week.  Maybe on a Friday night I'll kill some beers and play some, thats it.
Oh, and get this.  According to opportunity cost (can anyone guess what I majored in in college?) if your hourly wage is 15/hr, then that 300 hours of play suddenly costs you 3 times as much as if you were only making 5/hr.  Think about that, instead of playing 300 hours of the game, I could have delivered pizzas instead and probably been 3 grand richer.
Does anyone else suffer from extreme BF2 stress sometimes?  Sometimes it seems like the BF2 experience is: spawn, die, wait 15 secs.  spawn, die, wait 15 secs. spawn, kill! kill! die, wait 15 secs... sometimes it seems I'm only playing for like a ten minutes out of every thirty.  Oh and then theres the ISP fun, when you got sudden lag spikes all over the place...
You know, I am glad CIV IV is out.  Its been a while since I played a good single player game where you can actually play the entire time instead of watching the ground or sky and a timer count down until you can die again.

Oh by the way I was an econ major heh.

For fun I join an empty server on Dalian Plant and try to find all the interesting places I can land a J-10, and Fly a Chopper and do Loops/Spins and just try different things.

I've landed on almost every roof, I have parked under the Carrier, I have flown through the Crain at South Docks every way possible. Landed inside the Warehouse. Flown a Chopper through the warehouse, flown to the bottom of each Silo (You know you've found the bottom when you explode lol), I have done it all. Now im bored with that map haha...

Something fun to do with Clanmates while im going over stupid shit I do..:

Have a Clan member jump out of a Jet at 350 Feet and Parachute down, Try to Pick him up in the Chopper before he hits the ground... It sounds easy but if you can't fly a chopper it won't be...its good practice for thoes who suck currently. Have Fun, its just a game afterall *eye Twitches* ...Assholes.

I have achieved three of my main goals playing this game.  I earned the WCR, I made 1st sergeant (today), and I have maintained a K-D ration well over 2.0.  The stats and awards are a good motivator, but they can become an end in themselves and sap the fun and spontenaity from the game.  Since this is likely my last prmotion, I now I intend to just have fun , and stop worrying about stats and points.  Maybe spend more time on maps I have avoided, get more proficient with less-used kits, maybe become a better pilot.

I usually do something similar just because I'm amazingly bored. It's kinda stupid but who cares? I jump in the plane and when I see some idiot shooting it with a pistol or something, I crash it on purpose. Then they wonder how they teamkilled me. That'll teach them.

I try not to think of it that way. I mean, I've watched who knows how many hours of TV, but I don't say, ya know I could have been out working some crappy job to make money. You basically spend your time to buy money or to relax. I would rather 'spend' my time doing something I like to do.
P.S. Civ 4 gets old after awhile, Elder Scrolls 4 looks promising for a single player.
