Today, discussing with friend the concept of cramming a tragedy into kiddie movies and literature.   My friend doesn't think there's a whole bunch of "tragedy" in kids films.  I'm going to prove him wrong.

Hopefully I didn't need to put the spoiler tags on:

Examples:
Babar - (Page one) Royal elephant family frolicks in meadow.  (Page two) Hunters shoot Mom & Dad elephant and Babar gets adopted by an old lady.  (Page three) Aww, cute elephant in human clothes.

Little Nemo - Happy clownfish couple naming eggs.  Shark kills everyone except dude clownfish and nemo egg

Santa Claus is Coming to Town (tv) - Santa actually is an orphan who is rejected by a german douchebag governor

I can bore you with a list I have already, but WTF...boredom killer right?

Anyone want to suggest a few blatantly tragic kiddy entertainment shows/books, etc?

Bonus points for answering the "why did they have to kill the parents (or other tragic event)" question?

That's the Disney formula.  Kill off a parent, have a re-kindeling relationship.  Kid struggles and triumphs.  If is an animal move, the animals are all smarter than the people, I call that the flipper effect.

to make the movie into a sob story, to imply the character is /will be struggling to some degree. Exetreme Makeover: Home Edition (which is on ABC, Disney owned channel) plays on the sob story frequently.

Sure, but why?

Every single Disney movie. Little mermaid: mom is dead. Aladdin: he is a street urchin. Lion King: Dad dies. Bambi: Mom shot by hunters. etc etc etc

Now I'm kind of wondering why they have to kill the parent to make a point.

Most of these movies are geared for kids under 8 yrs old right?

Another - Tale of Despreaux

Adding to the Disney movies: Fox and the Hound. God that was so sad.

I would say that kids movies nowadays aren't as tragic (or maybe the previews make it seem that way because I don't watch any kids movies nowadays), but back when I was growing up and watching Disney movies, they could be pretty depressing at times.

Beg to differ

WALL-E - Orphaned robot left on destroyed planet to clean it up

Astroboy - Scientist creates an exact replica of son, who was vaporized by a killer robot

Alvin and the Chimpmunks - Rodents are left to fend for themselves when their parents leave them, find some washed-up actor to adopt them.

UP - Man marries his girlfriend from when he was a kid.  They have a wonderful life until she dies about 15 minutes into the movie and then he straps balloons to his house and abuses a boy scout in the privacy of his airborne adobe.

Ratatouille - Rat is one of a million kids, but mom is dead.

Oh finally - I found a recent one with not so much tragedy - The Incredibles.

Tarzan.  His birth parents are mauled by a fucking cheeta.  Then later his step-dad (gorilla) gets fucking shot and dies.  Talk about tragedy

it would be harder to find a childrens movie without anything bad happening in it.

"Cars" was different in the fact that there really wasn't a specific tragedy; he is just being stuck in the middle of nowhere.  The main character is an arrogant prick throughout the whole story, too.
