Pull out the raptor, put the SSD in. Insert the 7 CD and install to the SSD. Then put the raptor back in and format it. Otherwise your system will want to dual boot.

simplest way is to leave the Raptor in your PC> put the SSD in as well> insert win7 setup disk> when prompted to install select advanced>select format>install to SSD when you formatted both drives

take out the old drive, put the ssd in your system, install win7, then hook up the old hard drive while the ssd is in there.  you can copy everything from the old to the new ssd.

and no disk erase utility is 100% certain, but they do stop most people from recovering data.  only surefire way is to destroy the disk, but then you wouldn't get very much money for it

edit: oops didnt realize you already got your answer

boot files from the old drive could interfere with boot files newly created on the SSD

To truly wipe a hard drive you want programs that will not just write over with 1s and 0s once, they do it over and over and over again. Even if it's written over once it is possible (for someone that has the time and the money/skill) to retrieve the data written over from the residual magnetic field. If you write garbage over it continually though, that gets awfully hard if not impossible.

ig I personally wouldn't buy anything but a new hard drive just because that is the piece of hardware in your computer that has the highest failure rate. I dunno maybe there is a bigger used hard drive market than I would think, but I wouldn't buy a used hard drive and use it as my main drive or anything.

correct... yeah that shit gets annoying when i try to scan someone's hard drive in a different computer and try to boot it up.

whilst i agree that it would be awfully hard to recover data with a multiple pass disk wiping program, you wouldn't believe the fucking microscope the navy has.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_force_microscope

they can use it to read the electron 'signature' left behind by the the progressively created grooves on a drive platter, and can tell whether a 1 or 0 was written to every block of the hard drive since it was first used.  of course, this is not technology you just happen to come across... even the FBI has to have a very compelling reason to use this.  so the really only truly way to guarantee data destruction is to destroy the physical platters.

He could use something like Cleanspace or some other disk wiping utility. Shouldn't take too long on a 74G drive.
Are you positive stuff erased with that software can't be restored?
If the drive is written over in passes, its nearly impossible to restore. I've heard tales of forensics where the open the drives up and so something magenetics, but honestly unless you committed a billion dollar crime, noone is going to do that.
