It is also a dialect of Chinese. Considered "standard" Chinese, even though there are gobs of other dialects.
I believe Taiwanese is a variation of Cantonese, yes. From what I've heard, Mandarin and Cantonese aren't too far off. Unfortunately, Rosetta Stone doesn't give you the background.
