I believe Taiwanese is a variation of Cantonese, yes. From what I've heard, Mandarin and Cantonese aren't too far off. Unfortunately, Rosetta Stone doesn't give you the background. Yes it is Feos, it may sound the same to everyone else just like Cybargs said, but to the chinese people it sounds different and you can tell, I can no longer speak the taiwan dialect of it because only my grandma taught me and she moved away and i've only spoke the chinese cantonese with my parents but they know both and mandarin, but I can understand every single word of the taiwan dialect , I only understand some Mandarin because my parents speak it a lot and i've been to china with them and all they spoke was that and im like lolwut

Taiwanese and Cantonese sound more ghetto and gangstah than Chinese But Mandarin will help you more on an international level. You only need Taiwanese to get by in the rural areas (more of Southern Taiwan). But everyone speaks Chinese.
