I'm ready to throw my camera out the window... it takes it between 5-10 seconds to snap a picture AFTER the green "ready box" appears. It wasn't that bad when I got it so maybe the battery is dying, I dunno. Regardless, I'd like to buy a new camera. Something in the $200-$300 range preferably.

I used to have a little camera that would snap the picture the instant I pressed the button. I miss that a lot. Quality was shit though.

I know they need a moment to focus, but once I see that green box, I want to the fucker to snap the picture. Not sure why this is so hard for cameras to do.

So does anyone know of a quality camera (anything over 7M pixels) that snaps the picture instantly? Or am I just dreaming?

I won't go above $400. And even that is pushing it.

Also, video output format: anything other than quicktime, preferably AVI or something that I won't need one-off codecs to work with.

It's does produce .mov files (hd). But nothing vlc cant handle.

An excellent camera for the price. I would stay away from Nikon in the point and shoot area. I'm not playing fanboi or anything, I think the make awsm dslr's. I've actually bought and used their coolpix line. I was extremely disappointed. ..like man I should really take this back disappointed.

Had a coolpix one before, lens focus jammed on me after a year. Now I have a kodak M863, havent had a single bad thing to say about it yet

And that powershot Kmarion mentioned is probably the best in the point and shoot class. Only problem I had with it was portability, it didn't fit in my pocket

Yea it's not er.. "slim". You pay for portability with quality though. Those little lens/sensors just aren't going to produce excellent pictures. My ex has this camera and I was simply blown away with it's results.

Check the 7 minute mark of the video for a sample of the hd footage. Make sure you watch in 720p.

I've seen them priced in the low $300's.

Actually, I lied. .mov just really kills it for me.

When you're an R-tard such as myself, you tend to shoot about 30 short videos a night and those all get piled into one massive folder by the time you download them to PC.

My problem with .mov is that you don't get the previews when viewing the folder. So it makes finding my movies harder.

Damnit Jim. Stupid .mov files....

I have a canon powershot sd790, only about $200-100 maybe around 100?, once you push the button, it takes like a second or two to focus and it takes the picture, good enough quality.

Possible, but not practical.  I doubt they would use it.

I wonder if camera makers will ever use open source codecs and containers like x264 and matroska... probably not, that would be too convenient

I know it's possible..lol. The camera I posted creates .mov container.. H.264. It's convenient enough.
