Should be enough for the Appalachian Trail. One thing about army packs though - they're shit. It'll do the trick, no question but the thing is the design of the fuckers hasn't changed significantly in years, the weight distribution is all wrong and it's a bitch to adjust properly. If you want to do more serious hiking then I sugest you get a decent pack because nothig will kill you faster than having a shitty pack.
Will need cooking gear. Little gas bottle will last you three days, get an element. I have an LSR "Pocket Rocket". Fantastic little thing. Shouldn't need a pillow if it's taking up too much space, can just use clothes. Remember in a sleping bag, (hopfully you've got a good one,) the more skin you have touching the bag the better it'll work so if you find yourself getting cold, strip off don't layer on.
Also a thing about the compass. I know people say "you must bring a compass" which is true, so many people bring one to tick the box so to speak but don't know how to use it, making it next to useless. So yeah, hope you or someone in your group know how to use it. Bring a map of the area along to if you can.
Another tip, with firelighting bring a bit of rubber along wit you. A bit of bike inner tube'll do the trick. Rubber burns even when wet and it burns pretty slow ad hot too. Could always find heximine tablets too but hexi can disintegrate and get white shit all over your gear if it gets too wet. Definitely bring more than one firelighting options.
Good food to eat while hiking:
- Scroggin, (nuts, chocolate, more nuts, raisins.)
- Dog biscuits, (oats, butter, chocolate, sugar, can put some saltanas in there or something - should be able to find the recipe on the net somewhere.)
- Peanut Butter
- Salami
Inter alia of course but those are some key ones I try to bring.
What else... eh, you'll be fine.
Three days isn't a long time, with what you've got you'll be well prepared and will be able to cope without anything you may find that you need on the ground. Remember to tell people where you're going and when you'll be back. That's all I think. From what I know of the Appalachian Trail it's not all that difficult so you'll be fine and yo seem more than prepared. Have fun!
