Should be enough for the Appalachian Trail. One thing about army packs though - they're shit. It'll do the trick, no question but the thing is the design of the fuckers hasn't changed significantly in years, the weight distribution is all wrong and it's a bitch to adjust properly. If you want to do more serious hiking then I sugest you get a decent pack because nothig will kill you faster than having a shitty pack.

Will need cooking gear. Little gas bottle will last you three days, get an element. I have an LSR "Pocket Rocket". Fantastic little thing.   Shouldn't need a pillow if it's taking up too much space, can just use clothes. Remember in a sleping bag, (hopfully you've got a good one,) the more skin you have touching the bag the better it'll work so if you find yourself getting cold, strip off don't layer on.

Also a thing about the compass. I know people say "you must bring a compass" which is true, so many people bring one to tick the box so to speak but don't know how to use it, making it next to useless. So yeah, hope you or someone in your group know how to use it. Bring a map of the area along to if you can.

Another tip, with firelighting bring a bit of rubber along wit you. A bit of bike inner tube'll do the trick. Rubber burns even when wet and it burns pretty slow ad hot too. Could always find heximine tablets too but hexi can disintegrate and get white shit all over your gear if it gets too wet. Definitely bring more than one firelighting options.

Good food to eat while hiking:
- Scroggin, (nuts, chocolate, more nuts, raisins.)
- Dog biscuits, (oats, butter, chocolate, sugar, can put some saltanas in there or something - should be able to find the recipe on the net somewhere.)
- Peanut Butter
- Salami

Inter alia of course but those are some key ones I try to bring.

What else... eh, you'll be fine.

Three days isn't a long time, with what you've got you'll be well prepared and will be able to cope without anything you may find that you need on the ground. Remember to tell people where you're going and when you'll be back. That's all I think. From what I know of the Appalachian Trail it's not all that difficult so you'll be fine and yo seem more than prepared. Have fun!

I know you were in the armed forces and I assume you know how much weight you can carry/how much it can suck but I'm going to say it anyways.

You're backpacking?

Dump the pillow unless it's a compact thermalite type of deal, even then reconsider...

Probably dump the rope, only carry enough to lift your trash. 550 ft. is excessive unless you're planning on falling in a ravine.

Make sure the first aid kit is extensive/survival kit, signaling mirror, thermal blanket, rape whistle

maps maps maps, laminated/other waterproofing

can opener

dunno what the sleeping bag is, make sure it is adequate...

toilet paper

backpacking stove + fuel unless you're eating cold the whole time

ideally you pick two methods of purification out of boiling/tablets/purifier, and tablets usually taste like shit

moleskin

as many backpacking straps as you can get your hands on, half way through the first day you and everyone else is going to figure out if everything is sufficiently tied down or not

3 liters of water might not be enough depending on water availability. Particularly if you consider cooking and how much your compadres are carrying

plate might be kind of big/heavy, sierra cup is ideal but if you don't do this kind of thing a lot you might not want to buy it

trash bags

bear spray

Not true at all, depending on the section it can be very difficult. It is a fucking long trail, it depends entirely on where they are going. There is some serious elevation changes at points along the trail.

also about what Ty said about the sleeping bag, remember if you get cold you all must strip naked and zip your sleeping bags together for warmth

Flamethrowers are essential, as well as agent orange.

but that shit is heavy, so you might want to avoid it...

Weight wise food and food preparation utensils is what will make or break you.

Fuck you and your GORP. Anyway I tried to refrain from crazy New Zealander-ness. I didn't refer to hiking as tramping did I?

Looks good. I went on a 5 day on the Appalachian trail last summer, was tough but had a great time. Just remember to string your food up in trees to keep away from bears etc etc (Im sure you know all this stuff already though). Only things else that I would bring is a ton of extra socks, when I went there was a lot of knee deep mud in parts and you will definitely be wanting to switch out. And then also some sort of water purification rig. We (brothers and I) just used Iodine but apparently that can be bad for you. Worked fine for me then though. Also, theres Cell reception for a surprising amount of the trail, so I would bring a phone to be on the safe side. Also, toilet paper is alarmingly absent from your list. Hand sanitizer and toothpaste etc aren't essential but will probably make it more pleasant.

Ill post again if I think of anything else.

Edit: Looks like ATG and TY covered a lot of it. I would actually keep the 550 around, lots of potential uses for it.

you can get little solar cells that strap onto your sack during day time. take an age, and quite expensive...might as well just bring more physical batteries.

This.

And from an environmental preservation point of view, what is more friendly, digging a hole to shit in or just dropping it right on the ground?  If animals shit in the woods, why can't humans?  serious question, I have some backpacking experience but not a ton

About the pack:
Not sure with the ALICE pack w/ frame, but the older packs heavily relied upon support from webbing at the back to distribute weight. So I dunno if the ALICE pack would be okay, but Im just saying that they're often used in conjunction with webbing if its an army pack.

As for the rest, more socks.

I know it can be done I'm just saying make sure you really want to carry the pots and pans instead of just plan for meals to do without if you're only gone for three days. Obviously if the trip was extensive you would want to kill yourself if you didn't at least bring a skillet or something.
