As I already stated in my GPU thread, my mother recently got a leftover PC from her work. Specs:

- Pentium 4 (non-Hyper Threading) 3.0Ghz
- 1Gb of RAM
- Onboard GPU, but available PCI-Express 1.0 16x slot

What kind of CPU is that exactly, what is it actually capable of? I reckon its a socket 468, which mean no sensible upgrading, but apart from that,.. Can I upgrade my RAM to 2Gb, will the CPU support more than 1Gb? What kind of RAM would that machine require, DDR2, single or dual channel? How much RAM and GPU power would be overkill with that CPU?

The thing is, I'm not living at home and my father and little brother don't really know how to look for this kind of info. Is there anyway to find out without me actually being there and opening the case?

Yes Windows XP runs fine, it works perfectly alltogether, I just want to upgrade it a bit.

I just checked the SIW program on my own laptop and,.. wow. That's great actually. I'll send the program to my dad and have him make screenshots of all the necessary hardware tabs. I'll then figure out what the computer is compatible with and order the parts. Thanks!

Either that or use CPU-Z. To answer your other questions, a 3Ghz P4 sounds fast, but.. it's not really. You're going to max that out with a 4670, even then you'll probably be bottlenecking the GPU. More RAM is always nice, especially since you'll be on DDR1, iirc you could get up to 4GB with that machine (XP 32 bit being the restriction).

Start -> Run -> type dxdiag

That'll tell you.

Someone once told me that GPU ram is also accounted for. Is that true?

Always remember that this is a grey area to most folk. Iirc it's taken into account on 32bit os, but I could be wrong, there's been many a great debate about it.

urrite, GPU ram is included also. Just play it safe and put Windows 7 64 bit, will probably perform the same once you strip it out.

No probs, I won't be upgrading this machine past 2Gb of RAM anyway.

I didn't want to suggest you were going to max out your ram, only wondering if having a 1 GB GPU with 4 GBs of ram like I have would operate normally if on a 32-bit system.

It would work fine but you would have less than 3 GB of RAM usable.
