mek get a history lesson, dude. the whole 'classical' ideal has been copied from ancient rome, and then later from classic greece and has been seen as the 'standard' of beauty right through the classical-era up until the advent of modernism-- at which point europe was still the leading taste-maker in terms of architecture, fine art and whatnot anyway. the point isn't who 'invented' the standard of taste, the point is the pervasive influence that they do command (for whatever reason)- america copied europe's approach and reinvented and reused many european architectural and art movements, e.g. the american gothic that is present in lots of manhattan's skyscrapers. america had a different take on 'modernism' during their own era of city-building but it took a lot from the european principles... big names like le corbusier.

basically stop with your cynical bullshit in every thread and just face that the founding principles of america's culture and architecture was based in european classicism. of course it was 'their take' but the whole 'city on a hill' thing and the layout of major cities like washington d.c. is just a neo-classical project. america is not a 'foreign culture' so you really don't have a point... we're all in the same boat and all conforming to the same standards of beauty and accomplishment.
pretty much right, except wasnt classical greece before ancient rome.
we didn't have the archaelogical or historical knowledge about ancient greece right up until about the mid-18th century. therefore we looked to rome, because its ruins, histories and architecture were present all through the UK and europe. adventurers, academics, historians and antiquarians didn't make it to greece until later-on... think of the Elgin Marbles and things like that. egypt came later than rome too- egypt was not properly mapped out and methodically studied until napoleon's invasion of egypt in 1800.

so the standards and knowledge of 'classicism' and the associated architecture, art and philosophy follows that historical-route...

You misunderstood my post, what I gathered from your post before was that only the European aspects of US culture could be considered "fine" and "cultured" in the sense that you meant. I said that terms/ideals like 'fine' 'cultured' is a European invention in the first place, and an attempt to apply it to say Asian or African cultures doesn't really work, so by trying to apply it (and then take it away by saying it only belongs in Europe and only Europe gave such a thing to the US) isn't really noteworthy.

I know American culture is based on European culture and especially how their government tries to mimic classic Greek/Roman architecture. That didn't really have to do with anything I said.

if asians were the settlers of america, maybe then you'd have an argument to do your usual soliloquizing about

Wait,.. America IS Euro right, as practically everyone who wasn't is, well,.. dead. We sent over all our trash as well as some Frenchies to make love to Pocahontas and shoot beavers so we could make tophats back in the metropole. Then all our trash, being far away from the establishments that "contained" them, started breeding like rabbits and founded the US. The trash killed most of the Frenchies, but tophats went out of fashion anyway, so the few remaining Frenchies stayed with Pocawhoretas and founded Canada. The trash now lapsed into an identity crisis since they didn't have a history and the history of the land they now lived it was thoroughly destroyed. So long after the Euro's left neoclassicism for the pretentious kitsch it was, next to the real deal scattered all over the continent, the trash for centuries kept using cheaper and cheaper materials to make even cheaper copies of failed Euro reproductions, which they subsequently called "American culture".

The British having so much trash by interbreeding on their bloody island for so long now had a problem. Britain was now the Naples of its day as all then maffia controlled dumpsites were closed and "independent". They could only be used for money laundering not for actually dumping trash anymore. Luckily for the British, there was Australia.

THE END
