It takes a good couple of reasonable nights to finish if you don't just blaze through at 140MPH, so that puts it on level with most other games of its kind.

to design such an immersive, close-to-detail environment and then not allow sandbox-mode / free-roam is a major fuck up, imo...

I know you're trying really hard to defend it, but please stop.

There was little to no immersion, I barely felt like I was in the 50's (I felt it more in Fallout 3 FFS!), the story was bland and unoriginal, the gameplay was EXTREMELY frustrating (especially with the severe lack of autosaves)...

A 6.5/10 at best for graphics and soundtrack alone.

Goodfellas had an incredible story. Godfather pt. 1 and 2 had amazing stories. And all 3 were original from each other.

This? Nope.

Rumor has it that the "Jimmy's Vendetta" DLC will be more free-roam oriented and allow you to start missions at your pleasing.  Also, a "Free roam" mod has been released for PC here.  I personally haven't tried it yet, though.

There is a huge demand for a dedicated free-roam mode and 2K is well aware of it, so I'd expect to see something soon.

To not have included it in the first place is completely idiotic however. Someone should get fired for that.

Wat no freemode? Wel tbh what's the point of freemode anyway? When you finish the game you can still drive all over the map with any vehicle right?

What's the point of freemode? I've played on gta4 longer after I've completed it than I have doing the story missions twice.

GTA IV freemode was amazing. I literally have spent over 40 hours over MP Freemode playing with my friends just finding stuff to do.

TBOGT freemode was pretty much perfect.

Gonna trade it in today. Get some credit for it and put it towards Halo: Reach or Dead Rising 2.

I agree. The first game had free-roam. You can do it in this game too, when it turns you lose to go do shit before driving to the next mission. Still, with DLC coming out for this game, it will probably be implemented as a direct feature. Other devs are essentially doing the same thing with their games.

I could just as easily tell you to stop pissing all over it as easily as you're telling me to stop defending it. You're talking like you wanted Francis Ford Coppola to write thie thing, when it's a bloody video game! Fallout 3? Where were the mutants? Where was VATS? Where was the skill system? Christ. The mob genre has been done so many times now that it's just about impossible to be completely original. It did not stop this game from being a decent venture, and I will be getting the DLC.

I do agree with you about the save system, though. Their chapters are ginormous, and it's irritating to start from the beginning of one if you want to replay a particular part.

You might want to update your OP.

[Edit: Hopefully they'll make police a bit more persistent in the DLC. Could be why they delayed free ride mode.]

The original is a cult classic, and I enjoyed this story just as much. Sales aren't surprising, (comparing it to Rockstar? lol) but I still want the DLC.

Why would I update the OP? It only goes to show how absolutely disappointed I am with this game. I was very excited for it to be one hell of a game (as were most) and it ends up being mediocre at best.

Fallout 3 had a solid story. Mass Effect 1 and 2 both had original, awesome stories. Red Dead Redemption had a BRILLIANT story (although I was disappointed at first) with absolutely incredible immersion. Dead Space had an original story.

It's not hard. Just because a genre has been done a lot doesn't give it an excuse.

After trying this, it kicks ass - I recommend everyone with the PC version that wants a Free roam option to download and install this.  You can pick your time of day and era, and then basically spawn into Empire Bay and do as you please.  Every vehicle in the game (including unreleased and pre-order bonus vehicles) are in the garage, plus Joe and Henry are out front and will follow you around if you tell them too.  Everything in the city works - Mike's Car crusher will still pay you, all shops are open, too.

Only problem is that you start with only $500 and no weapons, so you have to go buy lockpicks and guns.

True. Never liked GTAIV myself. But Mafia was never about freeroaming anyways. I mean, you could do it, but there was practically nothing to do except for doing some taxi drving and shooting mobs. It was always strongly focused on the plot, where the giant explorable city gave you the freedom to shose your own route or enough space to outrun the cops (who were dumb fucks and by judging the Demo they are still in NoII).

Post-apocalypse western, space-westerns and a western-western. Good, but hardly 'original' by the true extent of the definition. I've come out of Mafia with a strong sense of the characters and, more importantly, had a good time playing it. I'd tell people to wait for a STEAM sale, but I'm by no means sad that I forked over cash for the collector's edition.

Same here.  I dont get how everyone is so jaded these days, they hate everything that comes out.  I think the game was good, worth the price of admission.

Just because something is in a genre that's been done before doesn't mean it's not original.

I'm a huge Tombstone fan. I love the Man With No Name series. And I found RDR incredibly original in the western genre. It's not hard.

The voice acting was good (except Frankie... god whoever did her voice needs acting lessons bad) but the story needed work.

but I'm by no means sad that I forked over cash for the collector's edition.
I am. Cheap pricks at GameStop only gave me $26 back.

So, how would you modify the story to make it stunningly original?

Make it a tad bit longer

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Also, Joe Barbaro shouldn't have got whacked, or instead you beat the fuck out of leo and the driver and steal the car.. chase down the other vehicle and save joe.  Then you proceed to take out the rest of the family and become the rulers of Empire city after defeating all three families and teh Chinese.

I admit being irritated at that. You lose it at prison and you lose it during the fire. FFS. Second time lost, I just popped open a trainer and set it to 999K, since I didn't really see a need for the loss feature.
