  • Using a PCI-e cable from a different power supply w/ my power supply?

Hey, I'm new to this forum, but I'm building an overclocked i-920 and I want to do it right. I've heard that this forum has a lot of knowledgeable members.

To start things off, I am using an Antech Neo-Power 550W that I think is missing two PCI-e cables necessary for my new Gigabyte HD 5830 GPU. My brother has a Corsair HX-520 PSU that has those extra cables.  So they should work right? (I know what you're thinking, but I just want to be sure.)

Alternatively, I can use two separate adapters that convert a peripheral adapter to PCI-e.  I wonder if it is safe to use these when there are three things connected in-line?

Thanks for any help.

The Molex converters will do the job fine, but as to the question about using cables from another PSU... Do you mean, like, cutting them off and soldering them to your PSU? Or are they both modular?

I'd just go with the Molex-6pin converters that's what they are there for. Its possible that using cables from a different PSU will work, but I wouldn't risk it personally.

The cables from his HX520 probably won't even fit. If they do, chances are that they've got different pin-outs, which could potentially result in a bang. Go with the MOLEX-PCI-E power adapter, it's the safer bet.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Thanks for the replies.

Well, I guess I'll just go with the adapters even though the PCI-e cable from the Corsair does fit. You're right, it probably is the safer bet.

But, one other important question: The Antec does seem to be missing some cables, so in order to run the GPU, I have to have the adapters attached inline with the cables powering the HDD's will this be ok? Or, ideally, should the GPU have its own power supply directly from the PSU?

Here is a picture of what I have to work with:

That cable management is making my eyes bleed

Anyhow, you should just attach the adapter to two MOLEX connectors as close to the power supply as possible; if you've got two cables with two MOLEX connectors, you should connect them like this: PSU-Adapter-HDD, PSU-Adapter-(other MOLEX peripherals)

Thank you once again for quick reply.

I think it is best to just look for the right cables via Gigabytes website and then go see if RadioShack has them tomorrow...or just order them online.  I really wish it was up and running as I am a new hire at an internet marketing firm, and I told them I could run a Hackintosh with Final Cut and Keynote to do some tutorials etc... yeah iATKOS v7 I hope will work.

You mean Antec website? because thats the one you will need to check... I think. The actual power connectors for video card/motherboard are generic, its the correct cable/connection for the PSU that you have to check...

It didn't work with the Molex adapters, I think b/c one of the middle prongs is missing a metal connector. I did a cursory look for what I think I need and it doesn't look easy to find.  I think I need two male-male 6-pin cables, or one splitting to two 6 pin cables? Does that sound about right? Any recommendations?

I found what I need.     2 x Power Cable 2x 4pin in, 6 pin out for the Gigabyte HD 5830.

i think theyre modular so they should be fine. if you dont have to physically cut them off should be fine

For the life of me I can not find more than one of what I think is the right cable anywhere online except

http://www.amazon.com/PCI-e-Power-Cable … rid_pt_0_2

I really need 2 x 6 pin PCI Express - male to female

I don't know what else to do except call someone, but I leave for Kansas City, so the computer will have to wait until Monday.  :-(

All cuz of one stinking cable.
