Most of the data in the game directory is stored in zip files.

Look under /mods/BF2...bunch of big zips
Under /mods/levels/[any level] two big zips

Obviously the game has to unzip these on the fly to use the data.  Is this why the level loads take a long time?

Can these be unzippped for faster loads?  Has anyone tried?

A previous version of Flight Simulator did this same thing.  They stored scenery data in CABs but had a program that would uncompress all of them for faster loads if you could spare a few megs.

1) No, it's because the levels are huge and it's alot of data to load. Especially if you have to use a page file.

2) The "Zips" are lightly compressed, and I believe this has been tried before by multiple people. One of Two things happened.

1) Game wouldn't even start.
2) Punkbuster wouldn't let them in.

I unzipped some of those files and the game worked fine but I didn't see any change in speed of loading or playing. I did it several patches ago so I don't know if still works.

You unzipped them but all that did was just occupy more space on your HDD. The game still read the normal zip file, didn't even touch the files.

It depends on how the game reads the files. It may require you to unzip them first in order to read, in which case direct changing of the executable is required, which is illegal. However some games have alternate reading methods (egs; Freelancer read BINI encoded as well as raw uncoded .ini's, it didn't matter which format they were in) that don't matter.

The compression for BF2 files is really weak, they're aren't so much compressed as they simply are stored.

yeah it would be cool to have them totally decompressed but still in zip i think zip allows that I know rar, tarball and others do

u can unzip them fine without any problems, but i dont think it makes the maps load faster.

i think the only reason you would want to unzip them is if your editing one of them
