you will still have your money.
That might hold true for the US. Doesn't work that way here.
Yes it does. You're paying the barman with every drink you buy. He doesn't work for free. Your payment of his salary is simply indirect.
Exactly.

In Norway there are some cheeky bastards who get a full salary, yet still put your change on a napkin with "please leave a tip" written on it. Fuck that, I'm already paying $10 a glass for your shitty beer.

$10 a beer? And I thought NYC prices were high. Wow.

Not really. They charge $10 for 0.6L and often only have one beer to choose from, and it's hardly anything special (think Carlsberg).

Alcohol is heavily taxed in Norway, along with tobacco.

I'd rather have waiters/bartenders/etc paid a real wage and then eat the cost in slightly higher prices.

Why? You get better service from wait staff when they know their tip is on the line.

It's ok. There's just about a million other beers I'd rather drink before it. I'm a beer snob though

@liq yep, it's fucking stupid
Why is it stupid? Bartenders get paid $2 an hour plus tips.
That is the entire reason it is stupid. Two bucks an hour, that is even not even the minimum wage here in the Netherlands.

It is just a complete scam. Employers give their employees minimal wages and tell them, make the rest of tips. And I bet the drinks they're selling aren't cheap either. So they are selling overpriced drinks (which I can live with, since it goes like that everywhere), pay shitty wages to their staff and if you're not familiar with the entire retarded US ways of tipping you'll pretty much be cut off untill you cough up more money for the same drink.

Bartenders here get paid roughly $20 an hour. Which is why you don't tip unless they give good service. Which is how it should be. I'm not giving money away as a social convention, I'd rather give it to those who do a good job.

True, but I gotta say the service I had when I was in Paris was quite good and tipping isn't customary there.

Plus with new things like Yelp it's easier than ever to tell the world that a restaurant's service is terrible. A half-decent manager would then either fire his shitty staff or go under.

I dislike it because its simply the other way around, instead of the employers paying his employees, every customer that walks through the door has potentially turned into the employees employer since they are most likely to pay him more that hour than his actually employer will. That shit is just wrong..

No it's not. Half of the bartenders job is marketing. If he's shit and isn't pulling in customers he doesn't get paid.

The other thing I hate about tipping is that it's just based on price and not effort. It isn't any harder for the waiter to bring me a filet mignon than it is for him to bring me a caesar salad, yet he'd get more money for the filet mignon than the salad.

The other thing too is that the shittest bartender in the place is expecting tips just like the best bartender in the place. I'd rather tip the best one and not the shit one, to send the message to both that one is doing a great job and the other needs to lift their game.

Right. Marketing. It's his job to try to upsell you so he makes better tips and the restaurant makes more money. It's why you are offered sides and desert and drinks etc. Not because the waiter is being nice, but because it means a bigger bill.

There is a lot of competition. If one bar is known for having skimpily dressed bartenders it attracts a certain crowd. That's part of that bars marketing.
