Still, its better than some of your other reviews, and I don't see whats clever about deliberately making a book 'difficult'.

Finished Hamlet as my "read-between-classes" book and definitively enjoy Shakespeare more when I haven't been forced to read it as in high school (though Romeo & Juliet was the only one I loathed). Starting David Copperfield next, and will have to find something new once I've exhaused my book supply after that.

Naturally. Recreational reading is almost always more enjoyable than an assignment, and the pressure of being tested on the material.

I agree. Classics are marginalized by mandated exposure. I still haven't been able to get over my disdain for Great Expectations, merely because of all the rotten luck in English classes, it was the book I got assigned year after year. Even the convenience of having old notes to use was wearisome.

True. I had to read Jane Eyre and To Kill a Mockingbird in the same setting and enjoyed them both. Hated Gatsby.

to be honest to say you dislike a classic is fine... i can't stand a large portion of the literary canon, notably 17-18th century prose/novels (the drama is fine, though). to say there is "absolutely nothing redeeming about it", though, is something else. personal taste is personal taste. but as works of art, separate from your opinion/appreciation, of course they have applaudable factors.

i just find that sort of absolute denunciation based upon taste a little hard to swallow... even the most qualified art experts in the world will concede good points about the forms of art that they personally detest. to say there's nothing good to find in great expectations is sort of the same mentality as being bored or annoyed by something you don't understand. i'm not saying it's 'too difficult', of course not, but by that i mean that general sort of emotional response to something that doesn't engage you intellectually-- whether it be 'taste', 'difficulty', 'theme', or whatever. i can understand and agree for a lot of dickens being pretty uninspiring... but i realize that it's a result of me not being particularly gripped by the concerns or stylistic expression of the victorian period. they're good books, just not for you or i.

I found nothing redeeming about Gatsby. Sorry. I know some people love it. I think I'd rather get a root canal without anesthesia than read it again.

It wasn't too difficult. It wasn't an emotional response. It was just a bad book. Didn't like any part of it from beginning to end. Was almost physically painful to read.

Great Expectations is a 'good' book. I just don't like it after all the overexposure (twice was pushing it, but every single year?! UGH), if you know what I mean. It had already bored the crap out of me when I was a kid, even though I was able to sit through reading the three Lord of the Rings books without my eyes crossing.

I wish English teachers in America had something else up their sleeve. The final straw was when I had to read Great Expectations again in college English...though by that point I pretty much had the bloody thing memorized. Imagine my relief whenever something else was assigned, like 'Brave New World,' 'Fahrenheit 451' or the 'Yellow Pages.'
