In the IT industry? Maybe if you want to go into garbage disposal then having an HND is really going to make you stand out from the crowd, but otherwise someone with a degree is going to piss all over your application.

my advice would be to do this.

put any university aspirations on hold
do the apprenticeship
join a organisation and build up your tech skills & certifications (you will start at the bottom)
4-5 years into job request to do a Masters and get them to pay for it
do your masters in a business/management field, you don't need tech skills (you've got them now)
No you don't need a undergraduate degree, <5+ experience is a good substitute (you may have to demonstrate some level of progression though)

A masters is in my experience just the last year of a degree anyway, so you'll get the degree with none of the debt. Of course the above depends on remaining diligent and keeping focus of what you want, something i have noticed neither the robbins numpties posses.

Find a different field to go into. IT is not stable and you are likely to get outsourced. I know you're an arrogant fuck and think you know everything but there are millions of people just like you with the same skillset who are willing to take a wage even beneath a Scotsmans. Every kid that plays too many video games wants to be in IT because he thinks he will be able to play at work. That is your competition. You are not special. You'll blow me off, but this is the best advice you'll ever get: do not go into IT.

Well, what do you expect? I think you're an arrogant prick and don't like you. The advice is still valid though, the IT industry has been in a tailspin since the late 90s in terms of job security and pay. Once upon a time I was a CS major and I'm deliriously happy that I didn't continue down that path. I've watched too many friends go from job to job and end up back at home with their parents, or living on someones couch.

Well hopefully MIS is somewhat similar. I figure if I can get a security clearance job that'll help... can't outsource DHS work to the injuns.

And if not, I'll go with Aussie's plan.

Your work ethic, reputation, and ability to produce go a long way in any field and this field is no different. M3th is right about focusing on the work experience. I don't snub my nose at higher education but the reality is being able to do the work is equally as important.

Yeah seen the same thing as well. Too many people with narrow skill-sets, vendor loyalty, or, not continually keeping their skills and understanding up to date.

What makes you think your job won't get outsourced? UK won't do shit to "protect" IT jobs anyway.
And 'outsourced' doesn't simply mean sending the job to India. It could be replacing the IT department at your office and bringing in part time consultants in your stead. It could be ditching you and your ever rising pay and benefits for a fresh out of college kid that will work for half. These things happen every day in the IT industry. IT guys are considered a luxury and non-essential and are the first to get cut when profits sag.
