It's a shame he died and all but comparing him to leonardo da vinci or michelangelo (as the newspapers are doing) and even stating he has "made a dent in the universe" is a bit over the top .

More than one pundit, praising Jobs' ability to transform entire industries with his inventions, called him a modern-day Leonardo Da Vinci.

"Steve Jobs is one of the great innovators in the history of modern capitalism,"
http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/Steve- … 1.html?x=0

LinkedIn chief executive Jeff Weiner, also speaking after Mr Jobs stepped down as Apple's boss, said: "He is the Michelangelo of the digital age.
Alright, quotes from others posted by the newsmedia but still.

The guy was a great innovator but he displayed nowhere near the vision or genius that either Da Vinci or Michelangelo possessed. The comparison is ludicrous.

While the Da Vinci and Einsten comments may be a bit much, Jobs was one of the great innovators of the modern age. Many people are saying he's "just the guy who invented the iPhone." But he didn't just do that, Jobs was one of the key figures behind the modern computer age. I find it so ironic that there are people on the Internet at home typing on their personal computers that Jobs isn't all that important. But he's also pretty exceptional in other ways and I'm only just learning this with all the post-mortem media. For example who, after being fired from the massively successful company they founded, goes onto creating another hugely successful company? I think that'd be pretty rare - but that's what Jobs did with Pixar Animation. Few people could do that.

So yeah the media will go crazy for a few days because Jobs actually was one of those exceptional people who sort of deserve it.

It'll eventually wind up though. Let's hope so anyway, the Cult of Jobs was bad enough when he was alive.

He filled a hole in the market at the right time. I have no doubt in my mind that the technology would've been popularised with or without him due to the ever increasing use of the computer in academic circles, it was going to crash onto the consumer market sooner or later.

He was a very succesful entrepeneur, a good innovator but nowhere near the level of genius aformentioned people he gets compared to were.

i doubt einstein's networth was nearly as big as steve job's, even for his time.

so he got compared to edison and einstein.

edison was homeschooled. (thus most likely retarded/socially awkward according to some of the posts i've seen here from people)

einstein most likely wasn't as rich. (cause money is the most important thing right)

so, who's winning in the end?

edison was a dick but a good businessman. i think Tesla was a better inventor but he wasn't good at selling people on his ideas the way Edison did.

Einstein made major breakthroughs in science that have probably, in some way, contributed to computing.

I think Jobs was a great guy, businessman and innovator, but he did not make scientific breakthroughs that changed our understanding of how the world works.

You're talking about someone who was homeschooled in the 1860s, compulsory education was in its infancy.

OT for a moment:

Success at homeschool depends on a number of factors, including:

1. The way in which you learn and how well you can learn on your own
2. If your parents can't help you with a topic, then they need to be able to hire private tutors.
3. Things you do that keep you from being a complete shut-in. You don't need to sit on a hard chair all day staring at a teacher who doesn't care about his subject or spend your lunches grunting back and forth across the table at fellow neanderthals to socialize. Things like book clubs, martial arts and other such activities do help.

At a certain point with limited cash at your disposal, you can run into a wall. I left the one year of homeschool I took because we couldn't afford tutors or expensive programs for things like foreign languages and hands-on science. Once I was in high school, I decided to stay because I liked AFJROTC and got involved in Running Start college courses.

The final reason I stayed in public school was because I was an avid gamer, but didn't feel like having activities arranged for me "to get me away from the computer." About the only thing I regretted was that instead of getting to choose from a list of classics to read for literature, I was assigned Great Expectations 90% of the time.

...

The computer that was swapped in exchange for selling my consoles in an attempt to get me to stop gaming.

...

Only fed the fire. THANK YOU, WOLFENSTEIN 3D!
