I thought une peu was a 'bit'. 'A small bit' being what I was going for, at least.

As soon as I graduate university I am enrolling in nightly instruction in French. It's a total must.

Alt + 130, 136, 138 = éêè
Alt + 133 = à
Alt + 135 = ç

other than that I just use the Windows character map

Yeah, either in Ottawa or Toronto depending on which level of government I get into. If I am provincial I will take courses under my own initiative, but perhaps using the dollar of my employer. I hear that if I go federal without French they will actually put me on probation for up to a year and pay for me to take full-time (40 hours a week) French instruction until I can pass as fluent.

EDIT- but if you fail the fluency test after a year you lose your job...

When I did my co-op stint during college with the federal government, there were a lot of employees that took french courses. From what I understood, they just take a couple hours out of their work day every week for french classes. 40 hours of french a week seems like a lot and a huge waste of work time/money (then again, this is the government we're talking about).

The same government that just spend $300k in office renovations, yet they're letting 2000 employees go

I only know about the 40 hour/week French program because my cousin was hired into the foreign service and had to undergo it. For lesser positions (read: me), I doubt they would put as much effort into training you so quickly. If I can get a federal job without French and learn a few hours/week I would love to!

"Take your 11 years of bilingual education and stuff it. I'll speak broken English instead." seemed to be the consensus from the French employees.

During the 8 months of co-op I think I only had one or two employee that actually responded in French to me when I initiated a conversation with them.

You know, you're completely right. The French have no desire to learn English, yet the English bend over backwards to accommodate the French. Double standard at its finest.

Even if I don't need to learn French to perform my duties, I've always wanted a second language. It will be made easier if I stay with my current GF, as she is fluent in French, allowing me  practice with someone daily at my own pace.

As soon as I read "bone" I thought of "dolphins" before completely reading the whole sentence
