When 68% of the country is affiliated with one of the two major parties, that's hardly a "small minority."
Political machines are why we end up with shit candidates, not closed primaries. This primary season is a perfect example: there have been open and closed primaries/caucuses. And the winners have been all over the map...but Romney's won more delegates so far, IIRC.
