Let me put it this way..

The GOP front runners are so far into the batshit crazy, anti-science, religious zealotry, that I'd vote for just about anyone except them.

Leading candidate atm. We've had like five or six jostling frontrunners. FFS Bachman and Cain were frontrunners at one point.

Today's Republican candidates - doing everything they can to make GW Junior look reasonable and competent in comparison.

Seriously, 300 million people in this country, and the best the GOP can do is the current crop of clowns, trainwrecks, and inmates running the asylum?

The far right's problem with Romney is that he's too moderate.

I've never understood that mentality, since the majority of America lies in the center.

The problem is closed primaries.

Why should people aligned with one party get to choose their dude's opponent? If they want to vote in another party's primary, they can switch parties and do it.

Because its the reason you end up with shit candidates that appeal to a small minority.

Polls say different.

When 68% of the country is affiliated with one of the two major parties, that's hardly a "small minority."

Political machines are why we end up with shit candidates, not closed primaries. This primary season is a perfect example: there have been open and closed primaries/caucuses. And the winners have been all over the map...but Romney's won more delegates so far, IIRC.
