I don't think so. We consume a lot of each other's media. Half of the ultra right wing links on drudge report are from U.K. papers for instance. Of course Americans are going to borrow terms. I just wish the relationship we have with Europe wasn't so lopsided. Most white Americans fantasize about living in Europe and think they are really posh. Most Europeans hate is.
The only white Americans that fantasize about living in Europe are ultra liberal idiots that think living in a socialist society is superior. It's romanticism.
richard rorty, one of america's best 20th century philosophers, basically boiled down his thought to "a lot of third world countries should be a lot more like america... and america should aim to be a lot more like scandinavia". what an idiot.

most europeans hate what? living in europe? are you tripping? you haven't even left the states.
I believe he meant 'hate us' meaning most Europeans would rather sit in dog poo then live in America.

I have met boatloads of blue color Irish who want to live in "the old country". Italians are the same way. Never met a Pole who wanted to go back though.

Italian-Americans are a joke. They'll cheer on Italy in soccer and wear Fubu and rave about italian food, but Italians see them as American. They have no real connection and wouldn't feel comfortable living there.

I've never heard an Irish person say they want to move to Ireland. Visit, yes. Live, no.

kind of the way swedish people would think of you when you start talking about your bloody roots again.

and no shit, most people wouldn't ever feel comfortable settling in another country permanently. doesn't really have much to do with anything, identity- or pride-wise.. if you're born in one place, all your family, friends, work, life etc. is there. just because you have an ancestor from another land, doesn't mean you're gonna want to live there. even if you do love the place as your 'home-land'. a lot of things tie people to place other than patriotism. more practical, mundane things.

Sure, but I don't claim to be anything but American. I'm not Swedish-American or German-American, I'm an American. I just have ancestors that emigrated from those countries.

guidos most definitely do not listen to techno music. jersey shore type stuff is probably 'dance', 'pop', or 'booty bass'.

Just saw my advisor. I wanted to take a Spanish class so I could finally learn the language. But I can't take a beginner class since I did two years in high school. I can't take an intermediate class because I didn't learn shit those two years in high school. I am too dumb for a higher level class and technically over educated for a lower one.

What language should I try to learn? No one uses Italian, French, or Portuguese around here.

Your school doesn't have placement tests? Even if not, our school will allow you to switch levels if you bomb or over-perform on the first test for the class.

Either way, French or German would get my vote if you can't work something out with the registrar.

french, german, italian are ridiculously useful if you want to study 'humanities' or intellectual-academic subjects. mostly because of a preponderance of material and thought coming out of those languages (the 'continental tradition'). spanish is useful too, i guess, if you want a more everyday-applicable language in america. greek and latin are always fun, if you want to get super serious and scholarly.

other than that, what else is there? for employment and 'future' prospects learning an asian language could be good. doubt you'd ever get to grips with it / the culture well enough though to make it a college-level thing.

Go for Italian if purely for the purpose of knowing how to say things in a fancy Italian restaurant. My last semester I wanted to do an introductory French class because I had free credit hours available, but alas the 101 was only offered in Fall. Same with Latin, the bastards.
