Cracked a bottle of Gewurztraminer, from Marlborough in New Zealand. Has the distinctive lychee smell and taste that all traminers have. Dry acidity in the finish, quite nice

You're in the biggest wine producing state in Australia. Cleanskins can always be a bit of a gamble but there can be some real gems.Dilbert_X wrote:

Sourcing local to you I would look for any Shiraz or Semillon from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, Riesling from Eden Valley and Clare Valleys, Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra. Good Sauvignon Blanc from Adelaide Hills and Currency Creek produces good alternative varieties like Sangiovese and Tempranillo.
These areas produce some of the best of these varieties (Penfold's Grange is from the Barossa Valley) so I imagine even their cleanskins would be good.

Had an amazing Sangiovese last night at work drinks. From the Currency Creek region, generous chocolate with rich plum flavours and a spicy/peppery finish. I'm thinking about buying a case.

About to finish the last of a bottle of Shiraz Grenache. Tasty drop with similar characteristics to last night's Sangiovese, with a bit more plum and blackberry and a soft, silky mouthfeel. Very light pepper finish with a mild chocolatey bitterness.
Bought a case through work, it's a lovely Shiraz from Lanhorne Creek in South Australia. Had a few bottles and am really liking it. It's from 2010 so it's had a couple years to develop and will benefit from cellaring for a another 7 years or so.
Currently finishing off a pretty cheap 2012 Shiraz I got in my free case. It's drinkable but nothing to write home about.

i went to the Park City Food and Wine Festival this last weekend.
First, we rode the ski lift out of town and hiked back;

First is half this size and holds the white wines. This is the most of my reds, sans three cases.
2011 Barossa shiraz. Not the best I've had and certainly was a tough vintage. Still, not a bad drop.
Still haven't had a bad cleanskin.
We had a wine tasting at work, they were happy to offload the surplus part bottles they thought were crap onto me, I didn't care - because they were free.

We had one bottle at $280. He bought it because he knows the wine and he's about to open a Penfolds St Henri 1998 this weekend for dinner at a restaurant. Had a long conversation about wine, vintage, region and price. The guy is around 75 years old with a lot of knowledge, so it was worth the chat.

I'd never thought I'd spend $600 (staff price) on a single bottle of wine. Most I've paid before now was $70 on a bottle. Not sure why that needed an explanation, but I wasn't born with a silver spoon so maybe this is just normal for other folk.
And that will keep an easy 50 years from now in correct conditions (on its side, temp around a stable 12-15 degrees Celsius, dark environment and around 65%-80% humidity) as it's widely acclaimed to be one of the greatest vintages produced to date. The very first vintage of 1951 is still drinking well today, according Peter Gago's assessment of the bottle one fellow who brought to last year's recorking clinic here in Sydney.
Grange was modeled from the greatest Bordeaux wines when Max Schubert visited France in 1949 and learned how the best wines could age for decades; indeed, some of the greatest Bordeaux wines have transcended close to two centuries. Instead of using either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot (right bank and left bank Bordeaux respectively speaking) he used Shiraz (or Syrah as it's known everywhere else outside Australia), with a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon as part of the multi-regional blend.
I tried some Grange again last weekend and it certainly is an incredible wine. That said, the law of diminishing returns always applies to these sorts of things.

if you're into collecting wine and researching it, i'd put that down as a 'hobby expense'. is $600 a lot towards a hobby? i don't think so. not sure what that has to do with 'silver spoons'. some dudes spend $1000's on coral and rocks for their warm-water aquariums. it's not insanity. wine is almost a safer financial investment than some stocks. it's not even an irresponsible purchase. but okay. if someone bought a graphics card for the same sum and said 'i can't believe how crazy i am', people wouldn't bat an eyelid. it's a luxury item. same as an iPhone. what's the big deal.

I think it's the fact that it's a bottle of wine that makes people go "omg you spent so much." same as spending hundreds of dollars for top end whisky.
