Well, when you get enough lobbyist money in the pot, it's a good sign that there is money to be made off the breakup. That seems to be when our government intervenes.

It's all subjective, that's why. How do you calculate harm vs good? Who is harmed? Who is helped? What are the unforeseen consequences of breaking up a monopoly? Is the monopoly really harmful or will its replacement actually be harmful? It's all very much lodged in a moral gray area.

i thought you were against relativism and the eroding of concrete values and standards? i thought that was leftist cultural marxist shit?

now 'it's all subjective'? isn't that the clarion call of dangerous french theorists at ivy league colleges?

'i believe in this -- until it's complicated by something, and it's convenient for me, then i believe in its opposite. I'm a textbook libertarian'.

One universally agreed upon fact by everyone here is that you only see what effect something has on you and then justify it ex post facto.

Yeah, that's because you're all a bunch of twits that really don't have any idea what you're arguing about. uzi gets his ideas second hand from some faculty lounge he once visited, dilbert hasn't had an updated idea since approximately 1998 and you, while you've got a good memory, have applied it on stupid shit. Sometimes you let slip stuff that makes me think you actually understand more than you do. Like, I get a glimpse and I'm like wow, there's something there, he actually understands the political side of the argument he's making, and then I realize it's something you picked up on a reddit forum and you didn't really understand what you were repeating, or if you really do, you just can't break character long enough to have a genuine conversation.

I've spent the past ten years arguing with people who haven't taken any time to understand my position except as a caricature, and who have built up narratives that let them dismiss whatever I say out of hand. If I cared about universal agreement I would've left a long time ago. I'm only ever been here to argue a point of view.

Aren’t we all caricatures of ourselves here? I’ve done more lurking that posting in d&st over the years and I gotta say, there’s never been, between anyone, a decent conversation. It’s a sparring room for ideas we don’t get to chew on enough with others irl, and that’s ok. There’s just a limit to what can be conveyed through digital copy and memes.

i went to a very conservative and right-wing traditional university. it was actually during my time one of the hotbeds of UKIP activism, way pre-brexit and when even nigel farage was a minor and unknown figure. the demographic are heavily privately educated, heavily gentry, heavily home counties/southern; tory heartlands, basically.

seeing as you like telling me how divorced i am from american culture, you'd be well to note that 'faculty lounges' (lol) in british universities are not exactly hotbeds of american liberal-type progressivism. literature and humanities in general are known as being very 'trad'. social sciences faculties are far more likely to have fashionable and continental theories.

Jay of all people lecturing us about how we don't understand the politics of our political argumentation and just parrot ideas we mindlessly picked up elsewhere.

I wonder what "Tyler Durden" has been up to as of late.

and, yes, jay has adopted a typical right-wing rhetorical stance/position of being 'the beleaguered and under assault' one. they feed off this 'one against all', 'everyone mindlessly ganging up on me' thing. it can't possibly be because their thinking is risible or has more holes and inconsistencies than swiss cheese. nope.

History majors are more often than not right wing. A lot of people who like reading about wars and stuff. Political Science? Too many people major in political science because they don't know what to do or someone tells them they can be a lawyer one day or something. Social Justice Warriors tend to go into things like Women's Studies, African/Latino/Asian Studies, LGBTQ Studies (that's a thing, right?), and Social Work. I respect all majors except business majors. There's a lot to say about those people.

traditional literature departments are full of tweedy dons and semi-racist old men. it's not exactly pink-haired butch radical feminist territories. even the junior academics who are in their 30s or 40s quickly adopt the sort of reserved, arch, donnish mien. it's not at all some progressive handwringing liberal environment.

funny how jay complains about us being nitwits but then spreads national review-level stereotypes about college campuses. jay, a guy who has never been on a college campus and got his education from a repurposed prison fort.

The liberals arts subsidize engineering majors. I didn't need a lab or complex machinery to learn about Imperial Russia. Still paid retard tuition. Commuter students who tend to be lower income also subsidize students who can afford to live on campus and are higher income.

There is a lot to be upset about in the whole system. Social Justice Warriors trying to rip down statues are the least of the system's problems. The right wing focuses in on the wrong thing. I don't think they necessarily care about lower income students getting shafted by the system.

My poli sci wasn't too crowded. Everyone with no major was automatically put into business undecided

You went to a private college that shares a name with some boiler makers school. I would expect your school to have it together better and have a better prepared class of people than a state college in checks notes New Jersey.

I don't recall the name of the place but IIRC it had the same name as another famous school that does metal working or something.

A couple others bear his name but I'd say it's the most well known, only because of college basketball.
