Hey all.  Haven't been able to find an issue like I am having by searching so I thought I would just ask.

Here are my specs:

3.0G P4+HT
1 Gig PC3200 Ram
Creative Audigy 2ZS
6600GT 128Mb APG
2 x 250Gig Seagate SATA HDD's (RAIDed)

Now the problem.  After playing for about an hour and a half, either BF2 or BF2:SF, my game becomes almost impossible to play.  The screen starts jumping real bad as I move and the sound hops too.  I managed to get a look at my ping while it was doing it the other day and it was only 38, so I'm sure its not internet lag causing the issue.

I thought perhaps my video card was overheating, but I monitored it last night and the Max Temp it hit was 69C and it only hit that once in 4 hours of on and off play time.  The mojority of the time playing averaged a temp of between 60-63C.

My CPU is also pretty well cooled, staying in the low 60's through all of my play time.

I have not checked the FPS during the choppiness because I dont know how.

If anyone can tell me how to monitor the FPS I will do that, and then if there are any suggestions out there for fixing this issue, they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

This reminds me of when car won't start.  First thing to determine, electric or fuel?  Is it not getting spark, or is it not getting fuel?
Similar with computer: Is it hardware or software?  Are you sure its not a software problem?  Do you have anything else running in the background?  Music downloader, virus scanner, internet open to US National Debt clock page LOL?  Common problem is the music downloader, even if you are not using it, someone else might be grabbing from you, etc.

To check FPS when playing, press tilde ~ to open the Console.  Enter
renderer.DrawFPS 1
and it will appear in top left corner.

Close Console by pressing ~ again.
renderer.DrawFPS 0
turns it off.

If you're sure it's not software, what about your video card?  You didn;t list it, how many MB?  Done a firmware update lately?

Good luck.

I totally agree that I have to determine where the problem is first.

The video card was listed but I will list it again:  6600GT 128MB 8X AGP

I installed the video card about 2 months ago, so I have not updated the drivers since then.  I know NVIDIA has a new driver out, but I wanted to give it some time and see if there were any bugs with it before I installed it.

I make it a habit of shutting down as many background programs as I can before I start up a round of BF2.

I use only the windows firewall and I run AdAware SE Personal almost every night, just to make sure there is nothing creeping around my system.

I dont have any music downloading programs on my system.

At the moment I don't even have a virus scanner running in the background, I need to reinstall it, I know.  But I don't surf the internet much at all with this PC besides BF2s.com and my charter email account, so I am pretty sure there are no viruses chomping away at my system either.

I will check on my current driver version of my VC and see what the frame rate looks like when it is bogging down tonight.

Any more thoughts anyone??

Thanks again.

Hi

What is the upper limit of Your CPU temperature? My AMD is 60.
There is a good little program called Fraps www.fraps.com that shows fps (and captures video).
When the chop happens try Esc (to menu) - Alt+alternating arrows (?) (to desktop) - Ctrl+Alt+Delete (Win Task Manager where You can see how much RAM+CPU the different running programs use. Maybe there is a spyprogram initiating? You can end all programs under Your username except Explorer and Taskmgr and BF2. Try TweakNow RegCleaner Standard www.tweaknow.com to clean up, that might help.
Mine also chops in the beginning of big maps play.

Okay, doesn't sound like software/background.
And as long as you did a driver update when you installed, you should be good there.
What settings are you running in BF2?  I used to have ATI card with 128MB, and i found that it couldn't keep up to the game if set on high resolution, so I played Low or Medium.  I upgraded to 256MB card (and 2GB RAM), and run it all on high now without problem.

I'm no expert, but I'll reply to bump the topic, hopefully someone else can help.
If not, try posting in the TECH section if problem persists.  Good luck man.

Hey Freke,

If I remember correctly, my CPU is topping out at about 60C.  I thought it was the CPU before and checked the temps and they were higher, but then I realized my buddy that helped me build the PC put a fan on backwards that provides air directly to the CPU from the side of the case.  I turned that fan around and dropped the temp 20C under load.

I saw that FRAPS program earlier today, not sure how having another program running in the background can really help, but I may try it.

Is the TweakNow program just a registry cleaner?  I haven't heard of that one.

Rick,

My video settings in BF2 are all medium except Textures, which is on Low.  I think I am playing with the resolution set to 1024 x 768, but I would have to check it again.

Upgrading the RAM I could do if it comes to that, but I am not going to be able to do much as far as upgrading the VC.  I have a Socket-478 (I think) CPU and I was unable to find a mobo out there that supports that chip and PCI-e cards.  My next PC upgrade is gonna be EXPENSIVE, new CPU, new mobo, new graphics card.  Sheesh, not looking forward to that.

Anyway.   I am sure I could turn some of the other setting so Low but the more I have to knock down the worse the realism of the game is gonna get.  Ya know, turn off dynamic lighting - lose muzzle flashes.  Turn off Shadows - lose, uh, ... shadows. Turn down the effects - lose the bullet holes on walls that tell me I am getting shot at by a worse shot than me

If I have to do that I will, but I would rather find out there is something else I can do that will help.

Hi

Yes, TweakNow is just a reg cleaner, but it is the only one I've found that's free. I had problems with a sounddriver - uninstall didn't solve it - I also had to run TweakNow - that helped!

Fraps is a little fps counter one can use in all games. I didn't know there was one in BF2. Cool.

My point about the CPU temp was: if it is running close to the recommended MAX CPU temp from Intel?
I think 60C is quite high but I am not sure. I know my CPU will take damage at 65C.

It sounds like something is overheating but I'm not really am expert. Mavbe a fan or two will do the trick.

I would definitly scan for virusses. At www.avast.com/eng/programs.html You can get a free scanner.

Hope this helps the problem :-)

Freke,

I have read that AMD's run cooler than Intel's all the time.  I think mine can run pretty good up to 80C before you start nearing the threshold.  At least, thats what I recall reading.

Thanks for the virus scan site.  I will check that out when I get home.  I think I have a copy of Norton I can install, or I have also used AVG in the past, it's another free one.

I will post back here if I figure anything out.

Also, the door is still open to any other ideas.

Ok, so i played last night and monitored the FPS.  After an hour of playtime the game started getting choppy.  Turns out when its slowing down it is displaying 15.0/66.2 for the value in the upper left corner.  Not sure what the 66.2 stands for but I assume that the 15 is the FPS.

So I am having this issue with my video card bogging down for some reason.  Its not heat, I am monitoring that and it never gets above 70C.  Anybody got any new ideas??

Thanks.

Hello!

First of all 15 is your current FPS, 66 is the current average.

I can easily solve your problem. Your video card memory is NOT enough to play that game anymore even if EA say so.

Believe me, if you would buy a video card with at least 256MB memory 70% of your problem would disappear. Now your card struggles to load the new textures when they get into view. If you set the textures to low the problem will exist. Even if you set everything to low the problem will exist.

I know I had the same problem. In approximately every 30 secs the FPS falls down to 15 then it jumps back again in a couple of seconds. Very annoying. Seems to happen especially with choppers close to you.

Change your video card.

When checking FPS using the renderer.DrawFPS command, first number is the current FPS, second number is the average.  66.2 is uh, yeah...
Seems like it's not clearing the cache or something.  I'm still thinking driver update.
(But also, like I said, my old 128MB just couldn't keep up to the game, and that was original vanilla BF2, let alone night maps with flashbangies.)
Maybe check some more technical sites, browse/ask there.  ie...

I don't think its a video memory problem as I'm successfully running it with only 64meg . There used to be a memory leak problem that caused this but i think it was patched. Also try clearing your cache.

I had the same problem with almost the same specs. I have a 6800. Are you running on high settings? I was, turned it to medium and can play for hours without getting choppy. Also added another gig of ram to make a total of two and it made a world of difference.

I was running on all medium specs.  Yesterday I turned several of them to Low.  I only got a chance to play one map but it did seem to load faster and it ran totally smooth without a single glitch.  Then, when I quit out, a different issue I had been having didnt happen.  That issue was with the music running for about 20 seconds and no other program being able to run until it quit.  but it didnt happen this time.  of course, that also could be because I only got to play one map.

I will find out tonight when i get to play for a while.

How do I clear the cache??

I will look into an upgrade on the video card (doubt i will slide that past the wife since i just bought this one like, 2 months ago) and i will look into another gig of RAM.  I think i can do that without catching too much grief.

When I got another stick of ram the music thing cut down alot. Do you leave your computer on all day? Restart your computer before you play BF2.
