I think that there's a logical error in the code for the AA missiles. I gather that the idea was to have a way to lock on a target but to also give the pilot a way of evading the attack.
A1. You have only one airborne vehicle in the air space. You lock on this target and fire. If no flares are fired and the pilot doesn't turn much you have a chance of success.
A2. The pilot releases the flares before the missile reaches the target. The priority of the missile will change to hit the flares instead and the attack fails. I've never seen a heli or plane get hit while releasing flares.
So far all is good. Now. It seems that the coding has been performed in a way that will allow an AA missile to only hit the primary target if there are no other airborne targets.
B1. This is why the flares works, they will allways have higher priority than the intended target.
B2. This is what causes your missiles to allways go for another airborne vehicle than the one you intended. If there are two helis in the air the missile will likely go for the one you didn't target, since it will never go for the target if there are other airborne vehicles in range.
B3. Since you cannot target friendly vehicles the risk of hitting one is high. If we could lock on friendly aircrafts we would be able to protect them.
So, how to use the missiles?
C1. Try to aim in the general direction of the target without locking on it.
C2. Try to fire missiles when there are multiple hostiles in the air.
C3. Never fire a missile while having friendly aircrafts within range.
C4. If you have a lock, only fire if there are no other airborne vehicles or flares.
C5. Use multiple missiles, chanses are the second missile will never have time to lock properly, giving it a fair chance to hit.
C6. You cannot chose a target if there are multiple targets. You can only chose a target not to fire at in such situations.

I have no idea if it works this way but it seems so to me. If anyone bothers to experiment with this, please let me know about the results.
(Yes, I've posted this on the EA Forums too. I figure that some people don't make the effort of following several BF2 forums)
