I mainly used the UAV to alert troops before I read the fine article on this forum about being a commander. Then I started pointing out loads of stuff I picked up on the scan.
I've noticed the subject crop up in a couple of posts now, so....

How much should the commander spot 'n' stuff?

Do you prefer to constantly be updated as to where everything is?
Do you prefer the commander to keep his fat mouth off the airways?
Or do you choose something else equaly relevant?

?

I don't mind a commander who gives out info on enemies close to ally troops. I don't want him to call the 10 units in they base since it's irrelevant.

I had a good commander the other day though. He scanned, gave orders and what not, but he didn't give me orders cause he saw me attacking all the time. So he kept UAVing the places i was. That was nice, and i got alot of flags that day

EDIT: BTW good thread, been thinking of making one myself, but still recovering from the last set of flaming

don't worry, michael. you are doing just fine. people are feeling strongly about some issues here, and sometimes discussions get a bit heated. but it's all in good spirit

I love it when a commander spots for me. I am always looking at my mini-map.

It seems like over half the time I spot when I'm commander it gets ignored. Even when I'm spoting something virtually right on top of my teammate. Those are the times when I wonder if it's worth it or not.

Then again, there are those rare players that actually listen to the commander. Those are a absolute joy to spot/uav/supply for.

Yeah, as long as whatever you spot is relevant and a threat to your guys, definitely spot it out.  But if it's someone sitting a mile away from everything, like on a carrier, for instance, then it's not worth spotting.

I prefer when the commander tells me where someone is around me and thats it. When I play as a commander I  usually just point out enemy who is close to my guys, not enemies that are on the other side of the man where none of my guys are, well only for armors and cars, when I see something moving fast I report it so my team get eready for it.

Personally, I think the commander should point out all enemies that are:
1. Near friendly troops
2. Attempting to cap a friendly base
3. Heading for friendly assets or jets
Other than that, if an enemy is out in the middle of nowhere, it doesn't really help to know that they are there (unless they are the last people left alive on the enemy side).  On the other hand, if they are snipers, someone might find the info useful.  Hmmm.

Amen! That´s exactly what I spot when I´m commander. And as long as I see everything goes well I won´t give orders except there are free bases nobody wants to cap although they´re close.

As a commander I spot
1.  Enemies close to friendlies
2.  Enemies capping bases
3.  Incoming vehicles

Whatever you do, DO NOT blab over VoIP constantly.  I can't stand commanders who feel I need to know what they had for lunch, what position they drilled thier girlfriend with last night, or what coloured pants they are wearing... I DO NOT CARE!  I wish there was a mute button so I could shut these idiots up.

You can...go to MANAGE at the bottom of the players screen.  I think you can X out whatever player you don't want to listen to.  Should work for Commanders too.

indeed, unfortunately said commanders usually give orders through voip too... argh!
same with dumbass squad commanders who yell "TANK!" through voip.  Where is the tank? WHO KNOWS!!!

Too much chatter can be distracting, too little can often be fatal, that's the delicate balance you have to find. I don't envy those that are commanding and it's not a position I've held. I often 'spot' an incoming if there's no commander chatter at the point of CP, he's probably elsewhere.... I admire the good commanders and I sympathise with the ones that are just getting to grips with it... all in all, it's about your own judgement, do what you think is best I'll be happy with that

Commanders that feel the need to locate EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY TROOP on the map AFTER EVERY SINGLE SCAN make my nuts itch.  Who gives a shit if there's a sniper thumbing his sack 500m away from the closest spawn?  Do we REALLY need to get enemies currently on a UAV spotted also?  FOR GOD'S SAKE, WE SEE THEM!!  Ten guys at a back base waiting for the helo to spawn?  Completely unimportant.  Spot the helo when it gets up, and screw the 8 guys that it left behind.

When I command, I spot enemies that are approaching friendly troops that are not on the UAV, or spot enemies I see moving to take a spawn.  I also type in where they're headed.  I will always spot jets and helos, since friendly air assets can locate them easier.  I will not go through and spot every single possible enemy, only the ones relevant to the battles going on at the time.

Another thing I won't do is send a two-man squad to try and re-take a spawn crawling with 40 enemies, like so many commanders like to do.  The other night my friend was sniper and I was support on Mashtuur, and about 8 MEC troops (with a tank and two Vodniks) rolled into a spawn we were close to.  Our illustrious Commander couldn't figure out why we wouldn't jump down from our perch and charge into the fray.

I dont call everyone..if I see on the scan that there are alot of enemies easier to put UAV. I call only lone points cuz often its a sniper or armor unit + I call everyone if someone is capturing our flag but UAV is airborne. Also I call all armor units in order to guide our helicopters on it Hmm I guess thats it. Oh yea I call everyone around our main force group when UAV is destroyed, cuz ppl ask about it...

Call out lone wolf snipers, UAV squads capping points.  That all I could ask.

As Commander I always point out armor for the flyboys regardless of where they are, this usually means armor no longer a problem. That is if your pilots/gunners are any good. The chopper gunner is able to hit almost anywhere on the map if they stick to the middle (gotta love the 650m range on those hellfires!)

UAV is for the best squad
Artillery is for the slackers because they need motivation to get the lead out of their asses. It is always fun to chase your team across the map usin gthe arty!

Supplies are for me. gotta keep myself supplied with beer.

Commanders, on the other hand, would find it easier sometimes if the squad leaders (when not following orders and going on their own) would point out their inteded targets on the map via the "attack this, defend that feature". Then you can spot enemies using the scans even BEFORE the squad gets there (hoping to give the squad leaders a clearer picture what they are heading for - provided that the squad leader consultes his map before attacking into the blue).
Usually, I too spot for a Squad manually (zoom) or by satellitescan if I receive a request for UAV overflight while UAV is deployed elsewhere.
Every third (or so) scan i tend to report a general picture of the enemy's movements/positions for those soldiers out there intelligent enough to take a look at the map befor trying somtehing funny.* All the other times it's just fast moving targets (vehicles/chargign infatry) and super-stationaries (snipers).

*"trying something funny" remindes me of a match where, when I ordered a Squad repeatedly to attack a flag only guarded by a single soldier,  those dumb f*s refused to comply to the order and tried to cap a flag instead that was guarded by 2 APCs and infantry. They tried twice, with me marking the enemies and redirecting them, each time i found out what they were up to.
To no avail - I gave it up on their third try and got back  to help the other squads who were not that keen to die a hero's death.

if you KNOW (and you have to have) WHERE is your squad leader >>> you KNOW where tank is

but... many people join my squad and going to another side of the map or doing absolutly other thinks than orders are...

so for that annoying type of players i joined AsBo clan and we play perfectly together with voip / ts playing organised (i commanding often... etc.)

so if you want play BF2 good and if you want good feel from real teamplay > go and find some good bunch of people and join their clan or whatever

if you like playing alone > dont join squad or create squad ... so you wont listen commader

howg

If my UAV expires I like to continue to help the troops attacking a base by continueing to spot the area for them.
