I'm a white man. When I was at school I there were 3 Indian kids and 1 black kid. Only one of which was in my year. The town I live in has very few Blacks, there are quite a few Asian people now.
I have had very little contact with people of other races (Is other races the correct term ???). I do not consider myself racist but I am ALWAYS conscious of what I say to people (It has taken me 20 min to write this so far because I keep changing what I write, so fuck it I'm gonna write this how I think it).
I would love to sit down with people from all races and be able to have an open conversation with them, I think what I'm typing makes me sound racist, I know they are no different to me or anyone else, but to be able to sit down with a black person and find out what they consider racist, find the boundries of what is and is not acceptable talk would be great (you see in films 2 Blacks calling each other nigger but kicking off when a white man says nigger).
What I am saying is due to my lack of contact with other races has made me more paranoid about being racist because I have never had regular contact with other races. All my friends are white not because I'm racist but because there were very few blacks, asians etc in my town for me to meet when I was younger and not that many of my age group now. I think it kind of comes down to the fear of the unknown syndrome, I do not know how to act or what to say due to the fear of appearing/being racist.
On the other side I watched a Chris Rock stand up dvd and half of it went straight over my head, but whites were refered to as crackers, if Billy connoly refered to blacks as niggers there would be an uproar, I do sometimes think the whole racist issue has gone too far, we should all just live together and get on regardless of colour.
anyway i'm waffling now so that's my little ditty
education and open mindedness is the way to go
