I did 12 weeks basic traning at Aldershot ,which is very crueling and exhausting (I trained alongside the para's but i was in the catering core). Then after that i went on to study and train to be a junior officer as i had already passed my exams in catering prior to joining the army.

The sad thing was i busted my leg(in 2 places) in a freak accident 2 weeks prior to completion of all my courses and got discharged on medical grounds

But good luck m8 the hard work is worth it and i still have family and friends in the army and navy .

I am joining the Canadian army very soon. I have done a lot of research and spoken to many people on the subject.

Did they give you a set of fitness requirements you should be able to meet? Either before you go to basic or before your testing to see if they enroll you as a recruit?

Ie: set number of push ups, situps, or whatever? Sometimes there is a "run this far in this amount of time or less" part as well.

Make sure you can exceed all of these requirements. Try and reach double the amount of sit ups and such.

Also, if you get selected, and before you go off to basic, practice running up and down some hills or something wearing a backpack/rucksack with about 25 kilos of random crap inside.

And if you smoke, quit.

I hear afghanistan is nice this time of year.

I'm about to join the US Army (National Guard anyway).  If the PT is anything like the US just do push-ups and run...alot.  Good luck to ya.

And I know it sounds stupid but what is catering.  I keep thing of food service when I say it in my head but I'm sure I'm way off.  Just wondering.

Those of you that have been selected for Service start running NOW (well maybe 2day).

@ least 30mins a day 6 days a week, dont forget the situps and push ups. With S/U and P/U do say 1 min of each (rather than X amounts). Maybe Pull Ups too

Good Luck on your Basic

I diasgree with the running 6 days a week. thats how you tear up your knees.  id recommend running 3-4 times a week at least an hour each session. youll see the difference in well being in know time, if you could stick to it. DONT do push ups everyday.  do em till you hit muscle failure and then dont do any more after that. if you do push ups everyday your gonna do more harm than good by constantly tearing away at muscle fibers that are trying to heal and get harder.  sit ups you could do that everyday, and I recommend you do.  You could only get better if you do sit ups everyday.

a good technique for push ups would be "the pyramid"  start with 10, rest 30 seconds then do 9, rest 30 seconds.....once you hit one go back to two, rest 30 seconds then 3 etc, etc....

That sounds pretty good for push-ups.

Try and find out the basic requirements. Is is usually a number of push-ups and sit-ups, as well as a required score on the 'beep test'.

I was at the ADFA (Australian Defence Force Academy) open day, talking to and Officer Cadet about the physical requirements.

I'll pass on his advice:
"Make sure you can not only reach the minimum standards, but exceed them by quite a bit. If you can only do the minimum, you will be praying to god that you had done more preperation when you are on basic training".

Anyway, good luck.

I been in british army for over 6 years. Basic rtaining is progressive, takes you from a healthy civilian into "soldier fitness" over the 12 week training period. It is then up to you to maintain that level in order to pass mandatory tests every so often, such as the PFT (personal fitness test, formerly BPFA), CFT, ICFT, ACFT.
